Protests All Around

2006_09_protest.jpgThe city is always a hotbed for activism. Metro has a story about two gay men and a lesbian staging a sit-in in front of the U.S. Armed Forces Recruiting Station in Times Square yesterday. Only thing is the USAFRS was closed! The three protesters, who were trying to "enlist in defiance of the military’s ban on homosexuals" believe the USAF knew they were staging the purpose and decided to close up. Jake Retain, a Soulforce coordinator, told Metro, "Why else would they be closed at 10 a.m. Wednesday?"

There is at least one protest today. Still upset over the incident where a Central Park hansom cab horse died last week, PETA is holding a protest today between noon and 1PM over horse carriage rides. Though the ASPCA is still looking into Juliet the horse's death (she collapsed, her owner was whipping her to get her to walk around, as per his vet's instructions; the thinking was she had colic and needed to move around to release gas), PETA wants all horse carriage rides to be shut down. PETA will be meeting on Park Row between Spruce and Frankfort Streets.

And we're hearing rumors of a nurse-in at the Times Square Toys R Us today at 11AM. You know, to protest the alleged actions of Toys R Us employees who told a mother she couldn't breastfeed where she wanted - even though it's NY State law that mothers can breastfeed in public and private places.

I agree that the horses don't belong in Central Park, or walking through Times Square, or along 7th ave, or along side honking taxi cabs, but the horse died of colic, did it not? Colic isn't a result of working in the city, but rather an unfortunate condition that many horses develop (even in ideal environments). Perhaps PETA should be clear that their protest is simply about horses in Central Park and not about the death of Juliet in particular?

On a different subject, good for the nurse-in protest at Toys R Us. Go mommies.

Maybe instead of banning horses (which were bred for that purpose), how about 1) making sure the horses are treated well, and 2) reducing the number of cars on the streets. There are of course many ways to go about accomplishing #2, but getting the cars out of Central Park once and for all would be a good first step. It would benefit humans too.

i'd much rather see horses go than cars in central park

the smell from their shit is just too much

Yeah, but cars give us: cancer, asthma, heart disease, hypertension, global warming, geo-political conflicts, a lower quality of life, etc.

A few horses, well, not really.

But yeah, the poop is a problem on the loop road inside the park.

Will the Nurse In at the Times Square Toys R Us have, a la the non-Union labor Rat, a huge inflatable breast outside the store?

Yes, get rid of all hansome carriages and build a NASCAR race track around Central Park. I am sure PETA would be fine with that, and a little reminder of home for midwestern red state tourists.

Seriously, PETA is a complete waste of time.

Hey, Dude, I like your NASCAR suggestion! Want to remind you, however, that the Midwest is not uniformly red at all: Minnesota, Wisconsin, & Illinois (don't forget Barack!), among others, lean blue.

Any update on the nurse-in?

Why does NASCAR have to be around Central Park. Why not just build it (NASCAR) in the Bronx instead of new Yankees stadium or around Belmont. Then New York City can have seasonal horse racing and seasonal car racing.

Getting rid of cars would be a great idea. How about not letting them in the city at all. I prefer a horse over a cab any day.

Lifestyles of the bored and self-indulgent. None of these "issues" merits any kind of protest but I guess pretending you are a victim is considered cool in certain social circles.

nola: What are you talking about? What your issue that you would post that comment.

I thought you ment a male nurse in a g-string, with large pecks and solid gluteus muscles. Chippendale dancer look. Ooooh yeah.
