Quick Hits: Light Sentence for Fall at das Stadion

2006_01_syankeestadium.jpg

- Remember Scott Harper? He's that kid who foolishly jumped out from the stands at a Yankee game last season only to be caught by the net that protects the crowd from foul balls. For his actions, Harper was given three years probation and banned for life from Yankee Stadium. Seems a little light for risking the lives of all the people in those expensive seats. Then again, being banned for life from The Stadium seems like more of a punishment than the probation.

- Plans for the new stadium for the Yankees are making progress as Turner Construction was selected as the construction manager for the $615 million project (that pricetag doesn't include costs on the surrounding area). The new stadium is expected to be completed for the 2009 season and seat 50,800 with 67 luxury boxes. While the AP likes to point out that Turner is owned by a German company, what large construction company these days doesn't have an foreign partner? Check out some of Turner's projects last year in Turner City 2005, which include work for NYU and Hearst Tower.

- In other stadium news, the New York Red Bulls (maybe we should call them the Harrison Red Bulls) broke ground on their new 25,000-seat, $200 million stadium yesterday. The stadium is scheduled for completion by July of 2008, midway through the MLS season and will have a grass field. As a bonus, check out the photo of the scary Red Bulls' fan. You couldn't really dress up like that as a MetroStar, could you?

what new yorkers don't realize is that yank stadium is one of the worst places in america to take in a ballgame. it's an absolute hole and the fans are morons. being banned for life from george steinbrenners house of $6 hot dogs isn't a punishment.

So wait. Is the new stadium going to be called "Yankee Stadium"? If not, Scott can logically attend games in the new park, no?

I can't wait for the new soccer stadium. It should be ready just in time for Ronaldo or some other past-his-prime international star to join the Bulls.

There is nothing wrong with the current Yankee Stadium. The seats are comfortable and the upper deck is raked so steeply that the site lines and proximity to the action are great. The fans, as pointed out, can be embarrassingly vulgar as are the food prices.

George wants more luxury boxes.

No, Frank, you're the moron. Sorry Jeter never called you back, but Yankee Stadium is none of those things. You must have it confused with Shea.
