Fatal Hit-and-Run Victim ID'd

2006_09_wshw12.jpgOn Monday, police were investigating a hit-and-run death on the West Side Highway. A man was hit by a southbound vehicle at West 12th Street at 3:45AM, and the police were trying to find out who was driving - and who the victim even was, as police didn't find any identification on the body. And now it looks like the victim was Brooklyn resident Josh Crouch. The Post reports that friends say he was headed to visit his girlfriend upstate (his packed bags were in his East Williamsburg apartment). Crouch had been "working as an emcee with the band Mindspray and also had a job at the restaurant Luna Park in Union Square."

According to Newsday, the police think a box truck or tractor trailer may have hit Crouch; the driver is still unknown.

''who him''?
That kind of language intrigues I.

I was intrigued in the name of the town he was from. But according to Google Maps, there is no such place as Scawtauqua!!!! There is a Chautauqua, up by Buffalo.

There is something about this story that bothers me. No one seems to know what this guy was doing on the West Side Highway at 3:45 am. And why wasn't he carrying a wallet or any ID...was he meeting someone? was he drinking? was he running away from some one? The WSH seems like one big death trap to me and not safe in the early morning while it's still so dark ...

He was probably drunk. Typical Williamsburger. You have to be VERY careful when crossing the WSH--at ALL times. And when WSH is less busy people cross against the light all the time. Nevertheless, the hit and run dude should be found and executed. This is another reason why we need more surveillance cams!

But if he wasn't on a bike, why does Gothamist care?

I think Jen should start her own deathwatch site.

You know, it was partly an interest in NYC crime that spurred us to create Gothamist.

Seriously, though, crossing the West Side Highway is a fright - and at night, the cars zoom on it at crazy speeds (resulting in some crazy accidents).

he was a friend of a friend, and it seems that the prevailing thoughts among his friends is that it seems highly suspicious. but everything i've heard about this guy makes him seem like a class act. it's never great to hear of anyone passing away before their due.

hold your assumptions of this man's character people!
He was probably drunk. Typical Williamsburger.

He was a talented vibrant positive person - we lost a good one.

R.I.P

I KNEW JOSH FOR 4 YEARS AND I'M STILL SHOCK. HE WAS A VERY GREAT GUY ALWAYS WITH A BIG SMILE FOR EVERYONE VERY TALEND DON'T THINK THE HE WAS A DRUNKER O CRACKHEAD NOT EVEN CLOSE; IF SOMEONE COULD SAY WHAT HE WAS UPTO THAT SUNDAY POST IT

COMMENTS:HE ALWAYS USED TO HAVE ID,HE GOT NO REASON S TO GO OVER THAT SIDE OF MANHATTAN AT 3:15 AM & SPECIALLY ALONE DON'T U THINK?

Josh comes from a fine family here in Wilmington, N.C. His family is torn to pieces over his death. He was a wonderful young man, with a bright future ahead of him.

I was with Josh that night. We had been drinking at a few bars that night, the last I saw him we were at Employees Only on West 10th street around 3am. He had been off chatting with a table near the bar, and when we were leaving we looked for him but he had vanished without saying goodbye. I remember the last bar we were at, he had mentioned that he had forgotten his ID at home.
Yes, he was drunk, but to the person who wrote "typical Williamsburger": you should be absolutely ashamed of yourself. There was nothing typical about Josh. He was a beautiful soul and a great joy to be around. There are few people in this world who haven't left a bar drunk trying to find a cab home. And the fact that someone could "mow him down" (as the NY post so "tactfully" put it) and then drive off without stopping is digusting. If anyone should be to blame, it's the driver. I hope that someone comes forward with information for the sake of his family and friends.

Thank you for sharing Kris. We've all been wondering about the hints of foul play that stem from the fact he didn't have his wallet. This sheds some light on the situation.

Any idea he was on 12th? Is there a place to catch the train on or near that block?

Kris,
Please contact the police with the information that you have shared here. As one of the last people to ever see Josh, they would want to talk with you. There are still a number of unanswered questions and any information from you, your friends or others would be most appreciated. Thank you.

I did contact the police and they forwarded to me crimestoppers, who told me that if I didn't know who hit him and didn't see him get hit then I "had the wrong number." I asked if there was someone else I should talk to and he practically hung up on me. If any of you have someone that I could relay this information to, please contact me at kristin.vieira@gmail.com. I really want to get to the bottom of this.
I have contacted the few people we were with that night and they said Josh had recognized other friends at the bar and had actually left before we did without saying goodbye. He must have left with these people. He knew one of the bartenders, too, and I am going to try and find out who was bartending that night and see if they can tell us who he left with. My friend checked her text messages and she had texted someone that we were leaving EO at 2:15am so something happened in that hour in two blocks that led Josh to that highway.
It disturbs me that the man at crimestoppers couldn't find the record for Josh's hit and run and that I acutally had to find the article in the Post myself and read it to him. If anyone can point me in the right direction, please email me.

I am rather taken aback about the comments regarding Josh being a "typical Willaimsburger". I met Josh a few years ago at Roseland Ballroom where we worked together for a year and lived across the street from each other in BK. He was young and full of life. He had an energy about him that inspired you to get active and motivated. He was not a drug addict and rarely did he get "wasted" as we (Roseland Crew) did. For people to think otherwise of him, especially those who never knew him, it's shameful. This city lost an inspiring artist as well as a NYC patriot. Sitting here in Rochester NY thinking about our days back in the city and in BK, I am gripped by sadness at the thought of this kid that I once had the pleasure of knowing and sharing a part of my life with, who sadly and unforgivably was taken from this world prematurely ...his name was Josh Crouch,..a.k.a Leftist. So to the people who feel the need to question and insult Josh, remember, he was someone to many and he will be sorely missed.

I'm at a loss of words but for anyone to be judging a person that they did not know, the way some of these people are, is disgusting. Anyone who knew Josh even for a moment knows how this world will be changed without his presence. He was and will always be one of the most amazing people I have ever known. He'd brighten any situation. His talent is something that we can all share with the world, along with the memory of him, his politics and philosophy. The world should know what was taken from us. The person who did this should know. I hope to God he realizes what he's done.

Anyone who has valid information should address it to jandpcrouch@aol.com, his parents. This was a fine and extremely talented young man. Hundreds were left mourning over the last week. The funeral was one of the most difficult times of my life (and I have dealt with many funerals from infants to the elderly). Please, if you have any information that may enlighten this situation, please forward it. Thanks.

Rest in peace Josh you will be missed by all of us your homie in toronto , canada
this kid doesnt deserve this and i cant believe that such a random act occured taking josh's life he was too good of a kid him and his crew mindspray are all positive kids and there's something that can be learned from him how to be positive a build with one another .. stop the bickering someone died here.. his spirit will be with us for ever ...

rest in peace my friend!

I met Josh 4 years ago at a bar called 'THE STINGER CLUB,in Williamsburg.Josh and best friend,Concept were the hosts of their group Mindspray and they hosted the freestyle hip-hop night. My husband Blackpearl introduced me to Josh and i remember being instantly taken by him.He was always great to be around and even though there was pleny of free beer for the duo,I rarely saw Josh drunk and I was the bartendder. For anyone to be so insensitive as to say that he was probably drunk, typical willliamsbuger, you should be slaped across the face.Josh was an amazing human being,he is someone's son,Josh had a HUGE life, and i can say that he made an impact on everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him,he will be missed...Nori
