The opening of the United Nations General Assembly today means a lot of gridlock and protests today. President Bush is addressing the UN tomorrow - but he'll be speaking at the NY Public Library this morning to discuss global literacy and will be raising money for the Republican party tonight.
United for Peace and Justice will be staging a protest and rally tomorrow. Though the police inititally declined UPJ's permit to march along 42nd Street due to overall UN security concerns, the UPJ is now allowed to march on an alternate route. Details are here, but marchers will assemble at 6th Avenue and 37th Street at 9AM tomorrow.

Why can't they do this General Assembly thing on a weekend???
This is the kind of stuff you'll have to put up with when you're the selfproclaimed Capital of the World. Deal.
Glad their expressing their opinion, but it sure made taking the "Express" bus a joy.
I was on the onramp of the southbound FDR at around 63rd street or wherever it is, and they had closed the road off to allow the convoy through, and i raised up my middle finger and flipped the president and his whole entourage of machine gun toting thugs the bird as they drove by. it was quite rewarding.
This nonsense is a very good argument for relocating the UN to Governor's Island.
bush:literacy......hahahahahahahahahahhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
#4> You are my hero! Proceed w/o caution!
While "Number the Dead" was endorsed by United for Peace and Justice along with groups, it was not a protest organized by them. Please go to: numberthedead.com
I am the head organizer of this event, which is called Number the Dead. It was NOT organized by United for Peace and Justice. They endorsed us. This was conceived, organized and excuted by me, 24, and two of my friends, Matt Farber, 24 and Erin Funck, 23. It was funded with our tax return checks.
The event was Sunday, from 10-11am on 5th Avenue, a very quiet and peaceful time in the city.
We did this in the spirit that young people can make a difference and can take a stand. And we did!
