Queens Girl Dies During Gym Class

2006_09_palmer.jpgSixteen year old Schermiela Palmer had been running laps at Beach Channel High School in Far Rockaway collapsed on the track and later died at a hospital. One student told the Post, "We were running around. We did two laps, I think, and I looked at her and she looked at me and she fell." Her family is stunned and says she had no known health problems, though her mother said she complained because students were "pushed" in gym class. One of her friends told the Post that since Palmer failed gym last year, she was wanted to try hard this year.

Newsday reports that Palmer's father is interested in the autopsy, "particularly because he said he was told by eyewitnesses that no one on the field came to his daughter's aid." Other accounts do say that a teacher tried to perform CPR, but apparently a defibrillator was not on the field, and the EMT arrived when a teacher retrieved one. The Post adds that earlier this week, a Brooklyn student collapsed during gym class; she was revived.

Oh you can be sure of that. Pushing kids to run around during a gym class.. thats just insane! Although schools do need to be equpied better medicaly... and it kids need to be in a bit better shape.

Yes, a lawsuit against Mcdonald's.
Her arteries were clogged with micky d's french fries.
Student's "pushed" into gym class? I think PE is required in schools.

Just fyi -- elementary students receive gym only once a week and recess occasionally. In the school where I taught, for example, 'recess' was watching a movie in the auditorium every day for 20 minutes. Gym was often cancelled. When the students did have gym, there were 60 kids and 2 teachers in a small gym where they did a very basic activity. When you take into account the fact that a lot of kids go home and stay inside, you see a HUGE problem emerging. Kids should be active every day, maybe then some health problems could be avoided.

Whata horrible tragedy for the family, but I hope they don't use it as an excuse to sue. I feel bad for the teacher. Most likely, the person was just doing their job. And I am sure that teacher is devastated.

smells like a congenital heart defect to me...

From what little real information this clipping provides, we don't know what really happened --and yet some of you fine people make disgusting comments this young girl (dr kilroy, you make me puke)and have decided her family has no basis for a lawsuit. The triumph of cruel consumerist republicanism is plain to see in your comments.

I think some of you need to grab your credit cards and see if you can buy a heart and a brain.

There's four seasons of celebrity fit club out.
Watch it and see who complains the most.
Exercise is GOOD for you. There should be a stat out there as to which group has this type of deaths the most. I wonder?
Put down the cheese fries and step away from the table.

Every picture I've seen so far of this girl shows her as being overweight... I don't think it's fair to make overweight kids run laps. There's got to be a better way to get kids to exercise so that they eventually reach a point where they can run a lap or two without passing out.

While we're at it... I don't think it's fair to make stupid kids learn stuff and take tests.

Ditto for making uncreative kids do art.

Looks like her parents weren't doing much of a job looking after her health from those pictures.

ABC Boy,
No one can take a test unless they spend some time preparing for it. Creativity/art is subjective. Running laps when the daily exercise most kids get nowadays is walking to the fridge is NOT the way to get them into shape.

Did you walk before you crawled?

Excerpt from The Post's coverage:

"It was the second time this week a city high-school student collapsed during gym class and required medical attention.

On Monday, 17-year-old Natalie Benloss, a senior at the HS for Public Service in Brooklyn, was revived by paramedics after she fell unconscious and stopped breathing following a warm-up run during gym class."

Regarding Margaret Harper's post: Thank you for sharing that information. I find it astonishing that physical education gets so little time in a child's week - considering how 60% of the USA is overweight or obese.

In this case, I wouldn't blame the teacher, the parents or the kid. I'd blame the education system, for failing to do what it's supposed to: EDUCATE! We need to start early and teach kids on how to live a long, healthy lives. We need to understand and address the hidden health concerns of being overweight or obese. And we need to get kids engaged in a level of activity that meets them where they are today, then improves their long term health gradually.

ABC girl,
The lack of daily excersize and obesity in kids these days is the problem of bad parenting, laziness and bad food. If your child is unable to run normaly for a couple of laps without passing out, then it is your duty as a parent to help your child improve, not give them special previlages. School activites like the gym are some of the most basic physical activites that kids should have very little problem with.

The point i'm making is that most likely the parents will sue the school, decrease its funds because of the parent's inability to take care of their kids.

"No one can take a test unless they spend some time preparing for it."

And yet many do just that, take test without preparing as evidence with the yearly number of failed students in our fantastic educational system.

How many times have you seen this scene:

Overweight family gets on a local subway, takes it ONE stop and then gets off. Encourage them to walk the 10 blocks every once and a while. PE should not be your child's only exposure to physical activity. You also don't always need to opt for the value meal. This way, running TWO laps around a track won't cause them to drop dead. They were pushed too hard? Give me a break! If anything, they don't do enough in gym class.

Granted, this girl may have a heart defect but from where it stands now - it looks like she was overweight and never got exercise if it wasn't required.

We had Home Ec when I was in Jr High and Gym twice a week. We even had sewing.
and there is NO reason why a Teen cannot run a lap.
NO REASON at all. short of serious medical condition.

they don't make chubby kids like they used to. i was totally the same kid in high school, would tell any lie i could to get out of running track during gym. i would complain about gym class, hell i even failed gym one term. i dont understand what it is that makes these poor kids just die from moderate exercise. You never heard about this in the 80s/90s when i grew up. condolences to the family, this is horrible.

ojibot: i'd say blame the government not the schools. the administration has slashed school budgets in order to fund the iraq war, fund pork projects and give tax cuts to the wealthy. how can a school educate kids without the money?

Hey Celeb Fit Klubber: Who complains the most? Certainly not Bizarre, Bone Krusher, Biz Markee or Young MC. That's what you're getting at right? Black people? I find the big rapper dudes to be the most into it and have the best humor about it.

Or do you mean just black ladies? Like.... who? Say it, don't be a coward. Jerk.

You said it, not I.
So, you do know who complains the most.
Not such an eye opener, is it?
I asked, look who complains the most and you answered your own question.
thank you very much.

I answered who DOESN'T complain the most. Who DOES complain the most? Jeff Conaway. Wendy the Snapple Lady. Willie Ames.

Whateva, coward.

I should rephrase that,
who has the most "excuses"?
Hits close to home, maybe?
Oh, please stop calling me names, they hurt me so.
That's the thing with you people.

I taught at a public school in the Bronx a few years back, and most of the kids seemed to eat Doritos and drink "quarter water" every day for breakfast. I don't know if they had gym. I know that spectators weren't allowed at sporting events. It wasn't really an evironment that fostered physical activity, in any event.
