NYC's Lacrosse Team Gets a Dumb Name

2006_09_titansny.jpg

Back in July, it was announced that professional lacrosse had come to NYC and that the team would need a new name. So, the new name was announced: The New York Titans. And, boy, does that sounds good...for Tennessee! Now, the Tennessee Titans don't have a deathlock on the word Titan, but how unoriginal was the NY Empire Lacrosse management to choose a write-in name like that? At least "Tennessee Titans" has alliteration. Anyway, NY Titans president George Daniel said, "The overwhelming choice of the fans is Titans. The image of New York is one of power. The name Titans captures that." Whatever - it's still lame.

Do you think the name is good? And here's the NY Titans website - their season starts in January.

Before 1963, the NY Jets were called the Titans of NY.

Could've been worse: the Trojans.

And, boy, does that sounds good...for Tennesse!

where?

Actually I think it's a pretty good name.

it's dumb, but so is the idea of professional lacrosse in NYC

New sports franchises never get good names anymore. Last good name I can think of is the Arizona Diamondbacks... 'cause-you know-they play on a baseball diamond...

You guys must be pretty young. The Jets were called the Titans their first couple of years.

It's also the name of the Trenton Hockey team. That said, it makes more sense for NYC than Ten-I-C

Please, it's boring, if everyone is using it. And just because the Jets abandoned Titans way back when doesn't mean the Lacrosse team needs to resurrect it.

It's a dumb name, everybody, write to your congressmen!!!!

the NY skyline... how cool is that?

Trenton makes. The World takes.

At least it's a name that ends in "s," bucking the current trend, like the NY Liberty.

Sports teams should have nicknames that ends in "s", while all rock and roll bands should have names beginning with "The" and ending with a plural noun.

Titans is an OK name, but 1) it was the Jets name, 2) it's now Tennessee's name - so it's been done.

At their early website where they were taking team name suggestions, I entered "Avengers". As an ex-patriot NYer and considering this is the first new NY team since 9/11 and the intense physicality of play in the National Lacrosse League, I wanted a name for the team that would let me express and vent those emotions. So, I went with Avengers.

Go see this team! I've seen many NLL games and "it only takes one" to turn somebody into a fan - it's that amazing.

Slow news day, huh?

So... when are you going to apologize to Jets' fans?

Diamondback is a kind of snake, local to the southwest...

How about the "NYC Manholes"? It's iconic and could attract a whole new demographic to the sport--what with hunky prep school guys running around in shorts.

Funny...there are many shared names out there:
St. Louis and Arizona Cardinals
New York and San Fransisco Giants
New York and Texas Rangers
*New York and Winnepeg Jets (they co-existed once)
Carolina and Florida Panthers
Sacremento and LA Kings
New York and New Orleans Saints
So because the NFL has a team named the Titans, New York can't use it?
Whatever.
Get over yourself and do a little research on the game and you'll find out that compared to some of the team names in the past (Charlotte Cobras, Columbus Landsharks, Detroit Turbos, Washington Wave, Pittsburgh Crossefire, Syracuse Smash, Ontario Raiders, Ottawa Rebel, Montreal Express, Vancouver Ravens) the New York Titans is a far better name that you'd think.
It is unfortunate that people who know nothing of the history of the game of lacrosse feel that they can bash the sport based on a team name, but I guess that just typifies the attitude of most New Yorkers...sad, really...in a city named the most polite in the world, it obviously doesn't apply to online things, just in real life...

a: thank you, kevin, for sharing my giant peeve about these names without an "s"

b: we might not like the idea of lacrosse, but at least the boys are cute. ;-)

Ryan Boyle is HOT... regardless of the stupid team name, I might start attending their games just to see this cutie!

Jen is a dumb name, how unoriginal can you get?

Ryan Boyle, rawr! Call me! (makes phone hand-signal with thumb and pinky)

"Remember the Titans" is another "Titans" team name. Just an awful selection. I notice that the contest ended in late July and "Titans" was already trademarked by August 1st. I truly doubt they even bothered to look at what people submitted. Some contest!

I submitted "Bull Dodgers." A "bull dodge" is a lacrosse move of great power. The name brings up memories of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Wall Street bull sculpture in Bowling Green is famous. It's easy to do a "Bull Dodger" logo, it has NYC significance, and the term makes sense to lacrosse fans.

"Titans"? Yech!!

What name would you suggest, Jen? You're quick to criticize.

All team names are stupid. NY Yankees? New York Metropolitan Baseball Club (the real name of the Mets)? NY Rangers? NY Knicks? All stupid.

NYC is THE CITY in the US- it is a Titan in its importance. The nickname fits.

By the way- don't throw stones: Gothamist?

Remember the Titans is a movie...This has got to be the worst, unoriginal, lame ass crap of a name. there are already a titans, and the jets used to be the titans...i submitted a few names as they asked people to come up with them..New York Groove, New York Empire and New York, New York! crap, the NY Big Apples is better than the titans.. they should have named them the NY Oilers, or the NY lame namers. i thought my softball team's name was lame Some Team, but it was actually fun, as we commented like that was Some play, that was some game and it was surely some season! titans, ughh
