Last Night's Action: Getting Closer To The Playoffs

2006_04_syankeeslogo.jpg -Yankees 3 Orioles 2: On a day when New York played without a lot of regulars they managed to eek out a win, thanks to Chien-Ming Wang. Wang went 7 1/3 innings to win his 17th game, giving up only one run. Mike Myers and Scott Proctor combined to finish the eighth and Kyle Farnsworth earned the save despite allowing a home run to Kevin Millar.

Jason Giambi was sent to the doctor to have his wrist examined while A-Rod was unable to play because of a stomach ailment. Interestingly, A-Rod was felled by a similar illness the last time the Yankees went to Baltimore. The win and the loss by Boston, reduces the New York magic number to 12.

-Mets 3 Dodgers 2: David Wright delivered the game-winning hit, a two-run single in the sixth and El Duque pitched seven strong innings for the win. With El Duque and Greg Maddux on the mound, fans were treated to a quick game, only 2:25 to complete. Fans may see some short games in the future as Pedro pronounced himself ready to start sometime this upcoming week. The win and the Phillies loss, reduces the Mets’ magic number to 5.

-Sharapova wins the Women’s title/Federer vs. Roddick in the Men’s Final and Martina Walks Off A Winner: It was a straight set victory, 6-4 6-4, as Maria captured her second Grand Slam title.

Federer only needed three sets to defeat Nikolay Daveydenko 6-1 7-5 6-4 and he should be well rested for the final. Roddick needed four sets to beat Mikhail Youzhny 6-7 6-0 7-6 6-3 and will have to raise his game to a new level if he hopes to win Sunday.

Martina Navratilova capped off her brillant career with a 6-2 6-3 victory in the Mixed Doubles Final.

-Rutgers 33 Illinois 0: Do we finally have big time college football in the area? The Scarlet Knights are 2-0 and earned their first shutout since 2002.

-Staten Island 5 Brooklyn 2: The Baby Bombers took game one of the playoffs by scoring twice in the sixth and adding single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth.
