The Flow of Flo

flo_winds.jpgWe are starting to get to that time of year when sunny, warm days can no longer be taken for granted. Rather than a rule, a day like today, with a high in the low 80s, is quickly becoming an exception. It will be cloudier tomorrow, but still warm. There's a slight chance of showers tomorrow night as a week cold front passes through. Showers may linger into a cooler, yet still seasonable Sunday.

In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Florence is deepening and heading toward Bermuda. Mayor Bloomberg you may want to stay in town this weekend! Flo is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by Sunday. Early next week we may see rough surf and clouds but Flo is currently expected to re-curve and stay well away from the U.S. But watch out Nova Scotia!

Our extended outlook looks quite pleasant.

Friday weather history and pretty picture lagniappe: Today is the anniversary of the 1900 Galveston hurricane, the deadliest natural disaster in American history. The hurricane, which was forecast by Cuban meteorologists but ignored by Americans, killed upwards of 8000 people and largely destroyed the then fast-growing city of Galveston. Galveston rebuilt, but it was Houston, inland and protected by barrier islands, that grew into a major city. Finally, from Astronomy Picture of the Day, a green aurora and a colorful composite image of the moon. The latter has fake stars!

Take sunny days for granted? You must not have been paying attention for the last 3 months as the weather has been really variable in my opinion. I seem to recall a lot of rain.

Not to mention that we've had a lot of gray skies over the past couple of weeks . . .
