hatin morons you guys are. why don't you go bullshite around on some lord of the rings listserve or something, cause you clearly are hatin' on all music. matt and kim are fun as crap and their songs are catchy as all get out. I admit, I pull up Gothamist first and foremost for the schadenfreude and poseur-bashing. Having said that, I visited their MySpace page to give an objective listen. Fucksakes, new or not that shit is pure noise. They're trying too hard to be something, but whatever that something is is to be avoided at all costs. Sorry guys, I gave it a shot.

I saw them over on Roosevelt Island earlier this summer and they were great. Matt was playing on some "my first keyboard" and Kim was banging on a cardboard box, enthusiastically churning out their charming lo-fi tunes. Everyone was into it. I probably wouldn't put them on my iPod but I'd certainly go to another one of their shows.

Jeff Baum rocks! I don't always agree with him, but I certainly don't have the time to see all the shows he does -- and he seems to do a great job at separating the wheat from the chaff.

Wow, I'm surprised by these comments. I randomly came across one of their shows and had an unbelievably great time. They have a lot of energy and the crowd truly gets into it. I don't think I've jumped around that much at a show in a long time. They are definitely a band that you need to give a few listens to. I was telling everyone about them, and at first everyone came to the same conclusion as the commenters here. But soon enough everyone was humming "yeah yeah..."

Jeff Baum (that's me!) does the band of the week posts. I take full blame/credit. The thing is, are there really supposed to be 52 great, amazing, groundbreaking bands coming out of New York every year? I don't think so. There ARE, however, a lot of interesting, hard working groups in this town that are making music that people genuinely enjoy. Is it so wrong to talk about them here? I never started doing this to try and break a 'next big thing' band every week, and to hold them to your average music blog standard would be unfair. It is more of a celebration of one of the many things that makes the city great...the fact that independent, struggling musicians actually still exist here. We believe that deserves attention. Surely those people who trash most every band that gets a BOTW nod are listening to something else they feel is getting unnoticed. Every week I ask for recommendations. They are all heard (even if I don't reply when you send) and some end up getting posted here. Please don't hold back.

yeah the ny/brooklyn scene seems to be at sort of a stand-still right now. its not that i dont like "something different" every now and then, but i would appreciate "something good" every now and then. but its not like jen carlson doesn't know good music, ive been into land of talk ever since she posted about them here. but bands like takka takka, elephant parade, human television, the ballet... theyre all just sort of lacking. they're all listenable, but none of them are really great.

I hate to be snarky, but is this what the NY music world has come to? I listened to that yea-yeah song...it's God-awful. Matt cannot sing and doesn't have an interesting enough voice to forgive the tone-deaf warblings...and what's up with the organ? Their photos are poseur...this makes me sad more than anything else...
