Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin is Dead

2006_09_steveirwin.jpgCrikey! Steve Irwin, best known as the Crocodile Hunter, was killed by a stingray while filming in the Great Barrier Reef today. The AP reports that Irwin had been filming series, "Ocean's Deadliest," "when he swam to close to one of the animals." Irwin's friend, John Stainton, who had been on board the boat during the accident said, "He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart." Stingways have a venomous stinger and Irwin was later pronounced dead by a medical staff in Cairns. Stainton also said, "He died doing what he loved best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. He would have said, 'Crocs Rule!'''

Irwin burst into the American collective consciousness with his antics wrestling wild animals and his unfettered unethusiasm for doing so in his show, The Crocodile Hunter. He also ran the Australia Zoo, which ws full of crocodiles and other staples of Australian wildlife. He faced a bit of controversy a few years ago when he fed a chicken to a crocodile with his baby in the other arm. In spite of the controversies, he was beloved, especially to the Australian people. Australia's The Age newspaper has an unbelievably cute picture of Irwin and a teeny tiger cub, as well as this quote from a mourner who headed to the zoo: "We heard the news ... it's very sad and we are very upset. Australia just lost a bloody good bloke. We grew up in Brisbane, followed his career. We just thought he was a good guy for what he did for Australia. He put us on the map, I reckon."

Steve's own website is down, probably because many people are visiting it, so here's Wikipedia's entry on Steve Irwin. Also, here's the Wikipedia entry on stingrays.

Very Sad.

Surprised? No

Despite all of his environmental work and informative TV shows, I do feel he torments a lot of the animals he goes after.

user-pic

Kojak, he never hurt me. I enjoyed his embrace. Get your facts straight before trolling. Thanks! Croc.

These animal guys never care about the animal.
Just like the Ohio Zoo guy who's on Letterman or the kook mauled by a brown bear.
What environment work or wildlife work did he do?
anything like the WWF?
Please. I wanna buy that stingray a drink.

user-pic

you idiots, get your facts straight before you bash the dead man. steve irwin dedicated his life to conservationism, was reportedly raising $4 MILLION a year for the austrailian zoo. morons!

user-pic

Hey Gothamist. You forgot to end an italics tag and the rest of the page is italicized now.

I agree with Dan, please know what you're talking about first. Not only did he raise millions for conservation (more than $4M a year, that's for sure), but he bought huge tracts of land to exist simply as wildlife habitat. He also made people aware that it's not just cute and fuzzy animals that need protecting. I'm from the Sunshine Coast, where his Zoo is, and he is the real deal. He was doing this years before he became famous, and would have continued indefinitely. He DID care about the animals.

CNN will be re-airing Larry King's 2004 interview with Irwin tonight. The viewer is invited to sit back and vote for who's crazier?

I see his PR people just invaded, just like what he did to those animals in nature.
He tormented and teased animals for the sake of entertainment. Period, end of story.
That's entertainment.

His PR people? Give me a break. People are entitled to support him without being 'PR'. I never used to like the guy, actually, because he does (did) act like a buffoon, but the fact is, he put his money where his mouth is. I also hated that he was the only thing American people knew about Australia, and thought we were all like that. But he was genuine, and he did good for animals overall, in spite of irritating the ones he showed to the camera. That he donated significant amounts money and land to conservation cannot be denied.

I'm sorry but he had it coming.

He thought animals were invisible to him.

user-pic

Steven and Nantucket Troller,

You're both dicks. Have respect for the dead.

As warner wolf and the late Nell carter used to say.
Give ME a break.
The guy was an entertainer first.
People can be such hypocrites. Watch the CNN interview. What's sad is American Children watch his show and then go on to burn the wings off flies or pull cat's tails.

What is wrong with you people? First of all, he did way more for the environment and endangered animals than fools like "lizzy krubman" and "nantucket troller" ever will. Secondly, don't you idiots have anything better to do on a nice Labor Day than to mock a dead man on a message board?

OH, so you people did contribute to his Zoo?
The guy teases animals, plain and simple.
He did a spoof of it on ESPN.
Oh I forgot, he had a nobel peace prize.

elmer/lizzy/werner, you made your point now go back to the bridge you crawled out from under.

user-pic

Tormenting animals, lol. Maybe he annoyed them with his fawning adulation, but when did he "torment" anything?

But, like Timothy Treadwell, he got too close and paid the price. Nature always wins.

For everybody who is thinking that he chased fame at the expense of aninamls, i'll give you this quote (from another forum):

"You know, I'm remembering one thing I saw on the show when this crocodile...I think it was one of the first he had rescued...died in the zoo. And he just got in the water and picked it up and started crying. I mean, he totally broke down. Everyone was just stunned, but it was at that moment that I saw just how strong his feelings were about these animals. Nevermind that the water he was standing in had other crocodiles in it.

Later in the narration, he said the other crocs seemed to sense something was wrong and stayed away."

If you really can't see that he had a genuine passion for animals, you should really adjust your view of things. This is a man who said he'd willingly die if his death would save a single animal. In the end, he did just this. His TV show has no doubt turned countless children as well as adults into animal lovers.

I believe that's what's called Crocodile tears.
Yes, it's sad he died but come on. The guy was one card short of a 52 deck.
And, He's Australian, If you know any, then you know what I mean.
thank you very much.

Ah, the uninformed cynicism that I've come to know and love about NYC. I had no idea that there were so many animal rights activists here, just waiting for this man to die. You guys are like Stadler and Waldorf, except not really funny.

For those who don't know,
Australians are known for being "cocky", if that's the correct term.
Another fact, Stingrays are known for being docile, they only fight back in self defense. I'd like to know how he was impaled through the heart.

user-pic

I think the Moral of the story is to never fuck with Stingrays. Especially if it's for a documentary entitled "The Ocean's deadliest".

It was bound to happen. If you tease deadly animals for long enough it is bound to happen.
Plus, zoos are inhumane and it is almost cosmic justice.

Libbette,

Steve Irwin is certainly not the only thing Americans know about Australia. Talk about generalizations. You sound as narrowminded as the people you describe.

Like him or not, he was hardly deserving of death.

You people saying things like "Please. I wanna buy that stingray a drink." or "I'm sorry but he had it coming." might want to keep in mind that he leaves a wife and two kids behind.

Try to keep in mind that an actual person died, not some comic character.

I also hated that he was the only thing American people knew about Australia, and thought we were all like that.
Don't be ridiculous. We don't think all Australians were like that. We thought you were all like Paul Hogan. G'day, mate. Throw another shrimp on the barbie. But seriously, we know plenty of other Aussies. Olivia Newton John. Nicole Kidman. Mel Gibson. Okay, given his recent history, you may want to disavow Gibson.

Steve Irwin was a very speacial person. He loved animals and cared for them a great deal. When his dog was sick he stayed on the couch with him for many nights until he got better. He loved crocadiles and he loved caring for them. He was a great man, that deserves great respect. He loved his wife, his kid, and there was no doubt about that. We should all honor him in death instead of talking nasty things about him, and for those who do should be ashamed of themselves. He never tortued, teased, or did anything that was wrong. It's that simple. Take it or leave it.

Then, I'm leaving it.
If you call what he does in front of the camera not teasing. Just look at the photo on top of this story.
Like someone mentioned, when the film comes out it's going to show him riding the stingray.

Shiraz, you don't know what comments I've heard and questions I've been asked about my country -- see above from "Bettie poop" for example. I'm not narrow minded, and I know that there are many well-informed Americans. Let's not make this personal.

Btw, Brightliner, Gibson was born and raised in the US and is a US citizen. You can keep him!

You are right, Steve Irwin should be remembered. He spent his life in dedication to the animal kind, something most of us don't even give a second thought to do. He did what he could do preserve wild life and teach people like you who know no better how to appreciate the wild life. Steve Irwin never did anything to these creatures. All he did was get up close and personal with them to see the true beauty that most people don't see. Give him respect for that. I bet anything you wouldn't have even given these creautures a second thought.

You respect nature by leaving it alone.
The producer of the movie just mentioned he was "riding" the stingray. He was swimming on top of it and it's tail swung up.
I surely doubt he brought any money from viewers of his shows to wildlife concerns.
Please watch the interviews he's done with the media, then tell me his synapses were firing.

I'm saddened at the news but not surprised,Steve Irwin was ALWAYS pushing his luck. He got away with it for over 14 years but the risks finally caught up with him.

What DOES surprise me are the comments made by some assholes here who gloat over his demise. The fact is he not only loved animals but also was FULL of life and a sense of constant adventure. He crammed more living into his 44 years than A-holes like Steve, Lizzy or Natucket will ever experience even if they live to be 97.

RIP Crocodile Hunter, I'll always remember your zest for life and straightforward, honest personailty.

all you guys are just hypocrtical dicks the man would be never hurt a fly. You say he tormented animals, you guys have hurt more animals than he ever did...dicks let the man die a hero

Steve Irwin was certainly a hero. You baseless idiots say he tormented animals by making them characters in a TV program, but it really comes down to this:

He took over a family run animal park and made it the most popular tourist attraction in Australia. He took the millions of dollars he made from this and his television show and put it into animal conservation. The only reason you see him bear-hugging a crocodile was so that he could relocate it to a safer environment. He was a goddamned hero that left behind a wife, two kids, millions of fans, and millions of dollars donated to the conservation of endangered animals.

the news is actually a lie. i'm here, i'm not dead, and nothing is wrong!

so calm down everyone.

k thx bye

A drunken Australian animal taunter is not a hero. You want to find heros? They are the guys and gals at your local firehouse!

Growing up, the man was my idol. He showed the world that animals have as much right on this world as we do. He lived and died doing what he loved most. This news left me flaberghasted. Though he was killed by an animal, I'm sure if he were here now, he'd easily forgive the animal for taking his life. He was a hero, a protector, and a father. Steve will live in our hearts forever...
-MrChicken

A "hero"?
Now that word is being used too indiscriminately.
Watch all his interviews that's being shown everywhere.
If crazy is the definition of "hero" then he certainly is.

I'm with warrior ajax! Maybe he didn't do it for Australia maybe he did it for himself! You don't always have to do something for somebody else! JEEZ!He is a real person that died...not just a celeb. You guys wouldn't have said this when he was alive so why gossip about him now goddamn assholes! so just like jmass said, let him die a hero! and nobody cares that u wrote "ok the news is a lie and im ok" go to hell "steve irwin" dont make fun of him!

All you assholes need to get a life and stop talking about the real good guyz for once

I'm really sad that he died. He was awesome. The people who talk shit about him don't know what he did for animals and the education he gave millions of children around the world in appreciating animals.

And, you need to stop idol whoreshipping a guy who really wouldn't give a rat's ass about you.
He made his bed and now lay in it.
You can't bite the hand that feeds you.
I would say karma but that's too simplistic.
The guy didn't have all his cylinders running and I'll leave it at that. Same with the "grizzly man".

Caracas - Venezuela ...

Thats bad .. Australia Missed the best animator of this world ... i am from venezuela , and I am very sad .. i enjoyed watching his tv programs in ANIMAL PLANET ... HE DIED DOING HE LOVED .... WORKING WITH THE ANIMALS ... WE ARE SAD too ... this went a bad Sorprise .... I cant belive still...

I just spoke to Steve Zissou. He agrees the show must go on. RIP Mr. Irwin

Yes, I would say he was a 'hero' in a way: He lived life to the fullest, he lived it to the edge, he lived it his own way and he reminded us that we share the planet with other creatures in the process.

user-pic

I am amazed at how cruel and callous this world has become. I'm not here to idolize Irwin, but I'll challenge any one of you negative idiots to say you didn't watch at least one episode. I'll go further and say you probably watched at least 6, and thought how cool that guy is. But now in death, you decide to come aboard a forum such as this, and rally the true nuts to disrespect a man, who according to factual information, did a lot for the animal community.
Just as Grizzly Man did. I cannot understand for the life of me how so many people can be so shallow and not see the true good these people do.
Set down your pabst blue ribbon and your remote control, and try, no matter how hard it might be, to get off your asses and truly enjoy nature. It really is the last frontier. Greed, negativity, crime have already sucked the life out of everything else.

I have not watched one single episode even when I had free cable.
I know zoo's are not the humane habitat they make them to be. I also know you keep an animal locked up in chains long enough, he will fight back.
I love nature and have survived many winters in a small cottage with no bathroom and the only running water from a spring.
The guy gambled and his number came up. Happens every day and not just in Atlantic City.
Just one story of 8 million in this City.
You wanna worship him, go ahead, no one, especially me is stopping you.

The really important issue, is the fact that just as HIS death was so sudden, and doing something which usually presents no danger to him, and was killed by a creature thats eldom kills even children, in other words, he died in a FREAK accident. One in a million the stingray was going to hit him in the heart. Almost as if it was designed. But in truth, it also makes us aware that ANY of us can and most probably die in such an incident, when we least expect it, taken by surprise while we are in the middle of something else.

Death hides in many thing, even your silverware, the trick is not to put yourself en such a situation. Thus analisis of where your every action is taking youwould be necesary to avoid such a demaise. An incredible ammount of consciousness would be needed. incredible fore-calculating of everyyhing one does and possible outcomes.

Despite what his critics or fans may say about the man (good or bad) he was an extraordinay man, as he was very active, and stood out from the rest, and became loved by many. A real acheivment.

That is why he will be remembered, and why he is being disscussed here.

"crikey! at bleeding ray's pierced me haat. looks like oym a ganna for sure. g'day mates!"

I read this in yesterday's paper and was a bit surprised but no where near as surprised as I am reading the ugly posts from some people on this board. What's wrong with you some of you people? Are you all that miserable in your lives that you would so callously mock a man who died? Would you laugh in his daughters' faces too? Shame on you.

I put a CURSE on all you assholes who are badmouthing the most fantastic man on the planet, lets see you bastereds get out of a curse! they work too! anyone who madmouths Steve Irwin will get it good eventaully so watch out!

and a booga booga, shaking some chicken feet back to you stasia.
go back to watching more TV.

Definitely a lot of people are talking about this, but what the hell does this have to do with New York?

I agree with that, what does this have to do with Gotham. Yes, the internet is abuzz with talk and shock.
I mean really now, will all these people who say he will be missed, really miss him one month from now?
I mean really, for real.
I miss Mel Sachs more only because I see him almost everyday. His office is one block away from me.
God Bless you Mel. You were one of a kind.

I think this is very, very sad. Truly a loss. That said, it's not a horrifying tragedy like the poor son-of-a-bitch in Staten Island who worked 100 hours a week at IHOP only to get beaten to death for $60.

Thank it was him and not his baby.
I heard his last words were: "Look at this beauuty! And it's absolutely harmle.. Oi!!!

My condolences go out to Steve Irwin's family, especially his wife and two children 8 yr old Bindie and 2 yr old Bob-- I hope they know how much joy their father brought to millions around the world.

Fuck all u people that say bad things about Steve. You can all go to hell. What if you died and all of these retards with nothing else to do came and said bad things about you. I'll laugh when you people get stung by something and you die. But for the people that like him I think we can all honor steve by helping animals around the world in his name!

R.I.P Steve Irwin, I agree with what I LoVE Steve said!!!!!!!!! We should all help animals to make him smile up in heaven

You have to be "taught" to love animals????
anyway, I'm going to hell and I'll make sure to say hi to Stevie. and put an extra shrimp on da barbie.
You know what? when I die, I don't care what people say about me because I'm dead.
You people are nuts.

R.I.P. Steve Irwin.

If you can honestly sit at your computer and trash this guy, you're souless. At least think of the kids he left behind. Much Love.

i've seen some of his shows, and it's fake. there will be an exotic snake purposely placed somewhere, and he'll say, "oh, wow....look at this beautiful creature...". it's ironic that his death was real.

I loved steve he was awsome and really tought everyone a little something about each exsotic animal. Have respect for him he has 2 children and a wife. Even if you dont believe what he was doing was true keep that too your self, thats your opinion. He loved what he did,you love what you do; we dont judge you on what you love so dont judge him!

OK, now it's just getting ridiculous.
Stingrays, drinks on me. I've never meant you any harm. And, I'm easy going like you stingrays.

Actually Grizzly Man did nothing for the bears. If anything he made them more accustomed to people and less afraid of them, which is bad for bears. He didn't raise money or save anything, he just ranted into a video camera like a loon.

Steve Irwin actually did things that mattered.

GOD BLESS YOU STEVE IRWIN. YOU WILL BE REMEMBERED AS A DEAR, DEAR SOUL WHO WILL BE MISSED SO BADLY. I HOPE GOD GIVES YOU A WONDERFUL PLACE UP THERE WITH ALL KINDS OF CREATURES TO LOVE.YOU WERE THE MAN!!!!! ..RESPECTED AND A ROLL MODEL. WE LOVED YOU HERE IN NEW YORK. JUDY HALL AND FAMILY. 000 XXX

the death of steve irwin has hit australia in a way none of us could have foreseen. yes, as steve himself said, we found his antics cringeworthy, and the media largely treated him like the slightly retarded cousin everyone tolerates because he's just a bit *different*, but the depth of feeling that has come from even the most cynical bastards here (like myself) is amazing. regardless of your opinion of the educational quality of his shows (and let's not forget that the target audience was middle america) the fact remains that most people would not know *anything* about the animals that he was so passionate about were it not for his wide-eyed enthusiasm.
steve was a genuine man, there was nothing put on about him. he lived what he believed. he put a lot of time and money into raising environmental awareness here, and in a way that totally undermined the ivory-tower/deluded hippy image of environmentalism that the oz government has been so keen to promote.
vale steve irwin. one of the good ones.

A couple of comments: (1) Steve Irwin was a conservationist, and used his own way to accomplish some exemplary ends; (2) it's very unfortunate that a good man died seemingly too early; (3) in the words "wild animal," the emphatic and operative word is "wild"; (4) as is often said, if you f*ck with the bull, you get the horns; (5) death should always be considered with reverence, regardless of which death it is; and, (6) people who choose to say cruel, spiteful, and/or caustic comments, given an occasion to do so, say more about themselves than they do through their literal words.

I'm rubber you're glue,
everything you say, bounces off me,
and sticks to you.
Unless you're a stingray, then that stick will hurt.
Ouch mi hart.

This website has footage of Steve’s last minutes of life. You can see the moment when the stingray gets him. Check it out:
http://s5.bitefight.es/c.php?uid=71926

I am American, and I perceived Steve Irwin as the "real deal", and I don't think that your average Austalian has to shake and shudder because he might have been perceived as a misrepresention to his country. So many fans, but so many critics! From out of the woodworks they come! With wide-eyed wonder, Steve was above all that muck and mire. He was just about getting on with his mission for wildlife. I dont' believe that he had a mean bone in his body.

Wherever some of you people come from...appears to be more deadly stingrays on the computer than in the ocean...poisen from a barb or a tongue--what's the difference?

I loved Steve's zest for living. He was so passionate about everything--not like many cynical people out there. Yes, you can chuckle when people try to describe him. I find humor in the way some Australians shake their heads about Steve.

Quote from an earlier post: "We found his antics cringeworthy, and the media largely treated him like the slightly retarded cousin everyone tolerates because he's just a bit *different*, but the depth of feeling that has come from even the most cynical bastards here (like myself) is amazing".

But I did not see Steve as a weirdo or acting like a "retarded cousin". I laughed at him because his love for life was sweet and sincere and refreshing. I don't think he could help himself from getting into the animals' worlds because his compassion and passion was too supercharged to just lay there.

Everything about him appeared to be a man that appreciated his family, nature and life with a beauty that never died away.

The untimely passing of Steve Irwin is a great tragedy. This has effected my family more than I could have imagined; he has been a great influence on myself and my two boys. The world will never be the same. In the past, I have dealt with this type of emotional pain through music. Being a song writer and composer, I have written musical compositions and songs to honour friends, family, and fallen heroes to ease the pain and commemorate the contributions they've made in life. Steve falls under the obvious catagory of "HERO." Please accept and share with the world this musical tribute in honour of the great "CROCODILE HUNTER" Steve Irwin.. WE LOVE YOU STEVE!!!!

Sincerely:
David James

First off, My deepest respects go out to his family in this time of grief. Secondly, This guy cared for the well being of all animals . I respect that in a person , Good for him. As far as wrestling a croc is concerned, He's an asshole! I don't care what way you slice it he was playing with a powerful , Wild animal ! I don't care what his motives where for wrestling the croc were he was playing with it . Did the croc say "Sure I want to be wrestled around on the ground and embarassed on camara" ? No, He toyed with these animals for years and when he least expected it he got the payback of a lifetime . Sure it's a wonderful thing that he raised so much money for the animals and all . I have no problem with that, This guy played with faith and finally got what was comming for him. In this world you have an assortment of individuals searching for there "Calling" in life . This guy found it & in my opinon wasted it being the showman that he was. Talk about being overzealess ! Dude took the term to the extreme .

To us, Steve is our HERO. To the wild life, Stingray is probably theirs. Who's Right or Wrong?

I loved the Crocodile Hunter. In the words of Russell Crow, "He is the Australian we all aspire to be. He touched my heart. I believed in him. I'll miss him." It's the same for me. I was extremely broken-hearted when I learned the tragic news. He was courageous. Call him crazy if you wish, but I like to think of him as daring, brave, and honorable. Steve was a caring person who cared about animals and their safety, no matter what you might say. I LOVE YOU STEVE! WE'LL ALL MISS YOU! CRIKEY!

Same here. He was a father of 2 children. So young, so happy; think about how they would feel if they read all of your nasty comments about their father. if your father died and you happened upon this site with rude comments about your deceased loved one, how would you feel? think about it.

All of you people defending Steve (or at least think you are) by saying crude things to people who don't agree with you, you are no better than them. I don't think he would have liked to see people swear on his behalf. he would be appalled. I love you Steve.

same here, Disappointed,Depressed and torn, and I'll miss u steve-o! You guys really know how to write a tribute. *SNIFF* i loved him too and now he's gone forever. i hope to see him in heaven someday, so maybe i won't have to wait for forever to see my hero.

we used to joke about steve saying "he's going to die someday with those crocodiles. it's inevitable" we all had a good laugh over it. Then, it happened. He died and the first thought went through my head was "impossible". after all those jokes, i still didn't think it was possible for him to die, careful as he was with the animals. i'm not laughing now and you shouldn't be either. i adored him so much. i'll miss you, steve-o.

I have nothing moving to say but i must express my feelings. He was my everything. We should all strive to be more like him; caring, humorous, and a little bit crazy. Steve was more than we will ever be; crikey. He was my hero.

Terri i'm sorry for you i liked the show alot my appologies

pleez reply to Crikey He Was My Hero, not laughing now, ditto, disappointed, depressed and torn, and I'll Miss u steve-o. I support them!

tragic...simply devestating. he was a person like everyone else. he was no different than you. we're all the same when we turn off the light. why can't people see that? crikey, i'll miss him.

WE LOVE YOU STEVE!!

Sincerely:
David James

In the words of Russell Crow,"He is the Australian we all aspire to be. He touched my heart. I believed in him. I'll miss him." It's the same for me. Call him crazy if you wish, but I think of him as a daring, brave man who risked his life many a time helping save animals. He was a person just like all of us; he wasn't crazy or cruel. He was Steve Irwin. We're all the same when we turn off the light. Thank you to all of those who see that. I'll miss you Steve-o...crikey, I'll miss you a lot.

I dont believe you guys..The man was real, you could see that off the camera eazy but like all of us he make also a dangerus job for living and he payed for that..
The thing is we lost infos for animals that we cann see only in TV and hes family lost mutch more :(
