Video of the Day: A Matter of Trust

Stephanie Gray writes:

i can't quite place these NY streets. it's 1986.. it looks like a street near NYU b/c there's one sign that says DOJO restaurant.. there are other businesses names, but I don't know them. not sure the DOJO has moved. this video reminds me of what old school nyc. not everyone looks wealthy. i also thought this street looked like elizabeth street or old little italy. and i also wanted to know how much was scripted and what was spontaneous. they just don't make videos like this anymore!!! while i feel sorry for BJ's career and it's just too bad, i did like how he focused on NYC on so much of his stuff.

if you could post this as one of your little youtube trivia bits, i'm dying to see who can figure it out. i was in 8th grade and rememberd this video so much in small town texas where i grew up. now that i'm a city filmmaker using super 8 film, i'm really obsessed with this!

The aerial shot makes it look like a Hollywood lot, but the street-level stuff is definitely 8th Street circa 1986, across from the main Dojo-- of course, they've cleaned the street up for the shoot.

Definately St. Marks Place/8th St. I can see the Grassroots Tavern in the background.

Just a technicality, it's not really 8th Street, but St. Mark's Place at that point.

It was really filmed in NYC. St Marks, to be exact. My husband remembers the day it was being filmed. They announced that they'd be filming there on the radio (WNEW, he thinks) that morning. It was in the summer and he was out of school, and he thought about going down there to see it.

St. Marks street btw 3rd & 2nd ave.

Looks more like St Marks to me. Theres a Dojo there too.

This isn't too difficult...definitely St. Mark's Place. Grassroots Tavern & Dojo. Between 2nd & 3rd Aves.

It's St. Marks Place. I used to work for a guy just down the street in the mid80s.

Isn't that the Dojo Restaurant on Saint Marks?

this is absolutely not 8th street or st marks pl.

Once upon a time on Saint Marks Place [between Second Avenue + Third Avenue] this building was THE ELECTRIC CIRCUS - - and before that it had been "The Dom" (a.k.a. the Polish National Home). Alas, this wide structure was demolished and the site was rebuilt. Billy Joel is singing in a loft that used to be the street-level space. - - http://TexasGuinan.blogspot.com - -

you must see him live...just once.

I think that's where the AA rehab use to be, which is now a Chipolte, market, luxury apartment building. It's defintely St. Marks during the 80s. Wow. Memories.
