There's a regular out on the south side of Canal street between Mulberry and Mott St. offering $1 for 15 pieces. You should be able to smell their sweet scent before you see them.

These treats and the equipment for making them sound very similar to aebleskiver (sp?), they're a spherical cake/donut-like item made with a pancake batter. They're a traditional Danish specialty and have been around for a very long time.
