Where's the best place to buy a keg (or 2) in Manhattan? If you are not lucky enough to have a kegerator, you might want to pick up a keg of beer for some celebrating. It seems like the largest places with the most selection are going to be outside Manhattan, but we did find out that Heartland Brewery sells kegs, and they have locations all throughout the city. (And we find their beer mighty tasty).
New York Beverage, one of the largest retail and wholesale beverage warehouses located in New York City delivers kegs throughout the city. They are located in the Bronx.
There's also American Beer Distributing (Thrify American) in Cobble Hill to consider. They don't have a web site, but you can reach them the old fashioned way at 718-875-0226.
Something to keep in mind, the New York State Liquor Authority has imposed it's own deposit law. They are charging a $75.00 deposit for "each" keg, 1/4 keg or any container that holds 4 or more gallons of beer. This is in addition to any deposit that the vendor itself will charge.
Anyone else have good or bad experiences with getting kegs in the city?

Appletree Farms on Amsterdam & 119th has been keeping Columbia students drunk for years. At least as late as 2002.
There is also a beer distributor at 124th & Claremont.
the spot in cobble hill is the best place to buy kegs. cheap. good service. close to Brooklyn Bridge for driving into Manhattan. I usually get 2 kegs, throw them in the trunk of a cab and drive them wherever. I've done this many times and never had a complaint from the cabbie.
Never again will I attempt to carry a full keg up to a 7th floor walk up by myself.
american does a web site. http://www.americanbeerbuzz.com
Thrifty American's website: http://www.americanbeerbuzz.com/
If you live in Williamsburg or Greenpoint and want a good keg delivrered to your door for only $10 more, Beverage World and Beverage World II on Meeker Ave. under the BQE will do it. Of course, if you live in Greenpoint and Williamsburg you should note this is a real Brooklyn Beer distributor and will punch you in the mouth if you ask for good vegan beer or something faggy.
Two notes:
(1) To get around the keg laws, you can ask for 1/8 sized kegs. Many of the beverage places upstate have started offering them. No $75 deposit, and no extra paperwork. If a place doesn't offer it yet, they might if enough people ask.
(2) I know people forget about NJ, but Hoboken Beer and Soda has everything under the sun. Great selection of brands as well as sizes. www.hbso.com
there are 2 keg places in the EV/LES area:
Houston Street Beer Distributors
298 E 2nd St
New York, NY 10009
(212) 677-1460
New Beer Whol DSTRBTR Inc
167 Chrystie St
New York, NY 10002
(212) 260-4360
i'm no help for manhattan (though there used to be a good place on w.23rd under the high line that i think has closed).
but in brooklyn, i prefer 'cobble heights distributors'. they are on pacific st. between boerum and court. they have a friendly staff and can order special beers they don't always carry (we get a nice keg of fuller's esb every summer).
also, you can get excellent brewery fresh beer from six point down in red hook. a very cool bunch of people to buy kegs from with very little hassle. the only problem is if you don't have a tub or tap you'll have to rent somewhere else, which they don't appreciate that much (the places you have to rent from although you're not buying their kegs).
there's a rather large beer store that i'm almost positive sells kegs in Prospect Heights, on Washington and Bergen.
so does Staten Island not exist to you guys??
it is technically part of New York City...
I can think of at least 3 places off the top of my head to get kegs here.
They charge a deposit on the Keg along with a deposit for the Tap?
What about "beer balls"? Is that considered a keg?
its own ≠ it's own
Not in Manhattan but, I use ABC Beer distributers on Montrose between I think Leonard and Lorimer. They're awesome.
American Beer's website is http://www.americanbeerbuzz.com/
american thrifty does have a website, it is
http://www.americanbeerbuzz.com/
I have had good experiences there, and there is a car service accross the street that will drive you and your kegs anywhere you want.
American Beer Distributing does have a website:

I've had great experiences buying kegs there and there is a car service across the street that will drive you and your kegs anywhere you want. Most taxi drivers will also allow kegs in their cars.
I sure do wish that headline were true.
I love American Beer Distributors. I shop there all the time and they do have a website.

i go to hoboken beer and soda outlet in hoboken. its right outside the holland tunnel and its a drive through. you just drive in and tell them what you want and they load it in your car for you. $10 deposit for shell, thats it.
i rent a zip car, and im there and back with my keg in less than an hour.
But you should just go to Bierkraft in Brooklyn -- fantastic selection, much more interesting than just a single keg.
They do minikegs and growlers now for the beers they have on tap -- they even have a Randall!
B&E quality delivers anywhere below 100th street. pretty good. new york beverage wholesalers is the best. next day delivery, decent prices. but to tell you the truth, i just go to jersey or westchester. ahh, gotta love the SUV.
Oh Snap! American Beer Distributors sounds great! Does anyone have their website?
I am looking for a place that sells kegs in NYC. I live on 20th btw 5th and 6th. Had one delivered and with delivery, tax and COS exhanged, ended up being $250 plus $75 deposit. Would like to find a place to pick one up. Any one know of a spot? Thanks
