Hurricane Katrina's First Anniversary

2006_08_katrina.JPG

Today is the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. As the Times editorial today mentions, it's "time to heal and renew." NYC is trying to do its part. Various city restaurants working with Share our Strength to donate a part of tonight's sales to rebuilding efforts (the Shake Shack is included). And Brooklynite Lori Baker and Jersey Cityzen Eric Harvey Brown have created a book, Signs of Life, a collection of photographs of signs made after Hurricane Katrina. The photographs were found on Flickr, and the photographers donated them to be used in the book. The book's profits are going to Common Ground Relief and Hands on Network.

Complete Hurricane Katrina anniversary coverage from the Times-Picayune and NY Times.

Is Gothamist an owner of the Shake Shack? Why does it come up in a post almost every day? Full disclosure, please.

user-pic

No, we are not affiliated with the Shake Shack in anyway. I thought I'd mention it in this regard because many other restaurants who are patricipating in the event are a little more swank.

Addtionally, the Post's editorial about Katrina today is pretty risible, trying to blame the media and regular folk.

Who wrote that NY Post editorial, a 12 year old?
I suppose the hole in the ground was all made up too five years later.
I've never experienced a flood and never hope. I dread having a roof leak so a flood is unimaginable.
And, basically it was a flood that caused most of the damage to NO.

THE URL LISTED IN THE STORY IS INCORRECT.

This is the correct url-->
http://www.signsoflifebook.com/

Thanks!

The url for the book entitled, "Signs of Life: Surviving Katrina" should be --> http://www.signsoflifebook.com
Sorry if that was unclear a few moments ago.

Thanks!

Yay, thanks for the post! We're hoping to sell 3,000 books -- which means we means can donate $10,000 to EACH of our non-profits! As always, we love the Gothamist!

I hate to say it, but you should not build below sea level, but what do you expect from people foolish enough to re-elect Nagin.

go to hell, toby.

WHOOPS - SECOND URL is INCORRECT, TOO! i just noticed that the second link at the bottom of the page - the one after David Olivier's name - is wrong. should be:
http://www.signsoflifebook.com

thanks!

If you aren't all suffering from New Orleans/Katrina fatigue, here's my own minor contribution to the collective gumbo.

It includes a dude I met in the Big Easy who really hates New York City.

Enjoy.

xnxox, I have been to hell, it is called Washington DC.

I agree with Toby. Why not build your house on the side of a volcano, oh right, it might erupt. But below sea level is totally the way to go. No chance of water getting in there.

It seems like just yesterday that Katrina happened.

xnxox, you are one classy person. Nagin is the same guy who grossly and knowingly lied about death toll figures and occurences inside the Superdome to stir up the national media. THe same man who said yellow school buses were not good enough to get his consitiutants out of harm's way, thus causing many more people to suffer than necessary. He's also been a great blocker of federal funds -- or if it's there, what exactly is he doing wth it then? -- that have been readily available for his people.

They re-elected him, they deal with it.
