Yikes yikes yikes. A livery cab making a left turn on York Avenue around 80th Street left a 79 year old woman crossing the street. Silvia Bromley was carried on the car's hood, and when the car hit a tree, she was thrown 20 feet near a nursery school. The Daily News reports that Bromley survived and was taken to NY Presbyterian, where she was in critical condition. A doorman said, "It's really God's miracle." The driver, Julio Morello, said he made sharp left to avoid a van; he was not charged.

I'm sorry!! I just keep picturing the cartoon version... you know, typical old lady (hunchback, walking stick, kitty cat, etc.), bumped by a car and goes flying through the air with that noise that Goofy makes when he falls off a cliff or something...come on, live a little, Ben.
If there were a God, wouldn't that god intervene BEFORE an elderly woman was hit by a car? And if she dies in the hospital...where's God then?

When, oh when, will drivers be charged for hitting pedestrians and bikers? I would hope that even a minimal fine or reckless driving charge would prompt some drivers to behave better. Am I right in thinking that in accidents like these, drivers almost never face any legal consequences? I drive in the city and I know well how some peds and bicyclists behave recklessly, but I'm the one piloting a ton of steel--a lot of responsibility is involved.
In my experience, car service drivers are the most careless drivers in all of NYC. I'm sure the guy in this case wasn't paying any attention to some poor pedestrian who dared to be in the crosswalk.
You guys have no reading comprehension. The Daily News article clearly says, "Morello said he was trying to avoid an oncoming van when he made the sharp left."
He swerved to avoid a collision with a van. I find that to be a good excuse. I don't expect a driver to allow themselves to get hit by another car. Now whether his 'oncoming van' story checks out is another matter for the investigators to handle. For the time being this is just an unfortunate accident that couldn't be helped.
