Fire Tears Through Bronx Auto Yard

2006_08_firebx.jpg

Yesterday, a reader sent us a photograph what seemed to be a fire on the Upper East Side. But after reading about the Bronx fire at an auto shop and yard, we think it's actually a photo of the smoke from the scene. The fire could be seen from as far away as NJ, so why not from Midtown East At any rate, we're suckers for any photos with the UN Building in them.

About 100 firefighters fought the three alarm fire. Since there were tons of cars on the lot that caught fire, neighbors thought there were explosions. Luckily only three minor injuries and the damage was contained to the lot, although the fire fouled up Amtrak service, leading the train company to bus passengers headed to Philly and DC.

I love the "could be seen from as far away as New Jersey" line in the Times (which WNYC repeated this morning without attribution). Fort Lee is about two miles from where the fire occurred, which is a lot closer than from where this photo was taken!
