New York Magazine rounds up one of summer's sweetest treats -- the ice cream sandwich. Forget about the tasteless, mass-produced blocks from your childhood, we're talkin' high end sandwiches, with high end cookies (think Jacques Torres chocolate chunk) filled with rich gelato in a range of flavors. Try One Girl Cookies' version of a whoopie pie filled with il Laboratorio's ricotta gelato, the brownie with fromage-blanc gelato from Ruby et Violette, or pick your own flavor of Otto's sublime gelato and tuck it into a fluffy brioche.
We will admit, we have a soft spot in our heart for Carvel's flying saucers, but we realize that its likely more based on nostalgia than actual flavor. Where do you get your ice cream sandwiches?

Our office just bought a bunch (for staff's August birthdays party) of different kinds from Ciao Bello. I opted for the traditional chocolate ice cream with chocolate chip cookies. They also had a strawberry one and a lemon one, which came with a lemon cookie outer layer.
Alias on the Lower East Side also has good ice cream sandwiches. Last time I was there, it was chocolate chip cookies with mint chip Il Laboratorio ice cream.
Nothing beats an It's-It.
Yeeech. Not one, but two kinds of cheese gelato mentioned? Were they out of the Pate Ripple? How about the Fancy Feast Chunk flavor?
I'm so glad they included Bierkraft's. That thing is INCREDIBLE. It's all about the beer.
Love the stuff from Bierkraft - but has anyone ever had Diddy Riese from LA (UCLA-Westwood, actually). Cheap and delicious!

I made them from soft cookies from PathMark or Stop N Shop and whatever ice cream is on sale. Archway or any soft cookie will do. Just stick them in the fridge.
'wich craft has a good one too. i had an oreo-style cookie with coffee icecream. yum.
