Mysterious Fires in Queens and SoHo

2006_08_sohofire.jpg

Last night, there were two big three alarms fires in the city. NY1 reports that over 100 firefighters responded to the fires in Queens and SoHo. The Queens fire occured in Bayside, and "destroyed a furniture store that had been in business for 20 years, damaged a Carvel ice cream shop and gutted several apartments." The SoHo fire, was at West Broadway and Spring, the building where the Emporio Armani store is located. Reader aj wilhelm has photos of the fire on Flickr and it looks bonkers - and it was really smokey for a couple blocks. The authorities do not know what caused either fire.

I can't believe that the fire was on Spring and West Broadway. From my north-facing 20th-floor apartment on Murray Street, the smoke seemed to be coming from just behind 40 Worth Street. The black plume of smoke wafted over Lower Manhattan and off to Brooklyn for more than 30 minutes. We could hear lots of firetrucks, and at one point we could even see the red-hot flames above the roof of 40 Worth.

Did anyone else think it was much further downtown?

Hmmm First the Prada store last year and now the Armani store. Can there be a Luxury store pyromaniac?

More specifically an anti-Italian fashion designer pyromaniac that targets the intersection of Broadway and Prince. Aren't the burned Prada store and Armani store directly across the street from each other?

That fire looks PhotoShopped! I think I see the devil's face!

Notme - the Armani on West Broadway and Spring is different than the Armani Exchange on Broadway across from Prada. Not that I would shop at either, I just walk around a lot.
