Last Night's Action: Mets Get to 70; Yankees Use Homers to Win

2006_04_smetslogo.jpg - Mets 6, Nationals 4: John Maine's scoreless inning streak surely couldn't last. Former Yankee Nick Johnson ended the streak at 26 with a home run in the 4th inning of last night's win against the Nationals. Maine's chance of winning his third game ended in the 6th inning when the Nationals scored 3 runs, chasing him from the game. The Mets scored two in the 7th to break a 4-4 tie with RBI from Jose Valentin and Michael Tucker. Billy Wagner pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 27th save of the season. And for those readers that like to place the Mets in the AL East for comparison (not sure why you would) - their 70 wins would put them atop the Yankees.

- Yankees 5, Angels 2: What a pleasant return from the DL Robinson Cano has had. Since returning to the Yankees from his hamstring injury, the 2nd baseman is 9 for 19 with two home runs and four doubles. Sizzle. Yesterday, Cano had a three-run home run in the 2nd and Johnny Damon followed later in the inning with a two-run homer. That was all the offense the Yankees would need as Jaret Wright and the Yankee bullpen did the rest.

- Cyclones 6, Muckdogs 5: The Cyclones defeated the Batavia Muckdogs as they continue their hot streak.

- SI Yankees 6, Jammers 2: The Yankees keep pace with the Cyclones with their win. More importantly, have you seen the Jammers logo? It's an angry bunch of grapes.

- FC Barcelona 4, Red Bulls 1: While this result was expected, the Red Bull website had the headline "FC Barcelona slays New York Red Bulls" - a bit much? How about, "Bulls no match in Spanish Bullfight." The Red Bulls were actually tied with Barcelona at the half, but eventually the talent differential was too much for the Red Bulls to keep up with. The game was Bruce Arena's first as the coach of New York.
