Blueberry Season

240px-Blueberries.jpgOne of Gothamist’s favorite summer food activities is picking blueberries--if we’re out of the city, that is. If we’re in town, we buy them fresh in the greenmarket. We like them in pies and tarts, with whipped cream or yogurt, or just plain--we’re easy that way. We love the combination of sweet and tart found in the berry. Plus, they're full of antioxidants: good for your heart and for anti-aging.

Throughout New England, especially in Vermont and Maine this year, blueberries are booming. The excessive rain that plagued the region had at least one benefit: it was great for the blueberry bushes. The season traditionally runs May through October and peaks in July, but this year growers are anticipating that berries will remain at their best through August as well.

We like to pick lots, then freeze them so we have a supply to last us through the winter. It's best to first lay them out flat on a baking sheet and freeze them overnight (so they don't get crushed), then put them into freezer bags for long-term storage.

You don't have to go up to New England for great blueberries -- southern New Jersey (in the rural part of the state) also has them and you can go picking at farms down there. It's a lot of fun.

take the hutch north to I-684. take 684 till it ends at route 22. take route 22 north thru wingdale, dover plains, amenia, millerton...about 15 miles above millerton past a catholic church make a right into the town of copake falls, go up the mountain past bash bish falls ( might take a look it is wonderful ) take the road into mass. go left where it ends in a "T" , road is paved and then dirt, make first right, pass lovely pond you can swim in (van der smiseen park ), keep going and dirt road merges into blacktop. bear right, about 3 or 4 miles further you come to blueberry hill farm. great picking. late august into mid september.

blueberries are wickety wack. The best berry is the blackberry! for some reason blackberries are in season for a week and then the rest of the time they are ridiculously overpriced. I can buy $1 baskets of blueberries but not blackberries. Pisses me off. Raspberries are the worst cause shit always gets stuck in the hole that raspberries leave from the stem and when you wash them you see dead grubs that float out of them. nasty.
