R.I.P., Detective Fred the Cat

A very sad story about our favorite crime fighting kitty: Newsday reports that Fred the cat died yesterday, after being hit by a car. Fred had wandered into the street when he was killed, which is all the convincing we need that cats should be kept indoors. Fred rose to fame six months ago when he helped the Brooklyn DA's office bust a fake vet, and was adopted by Brooklyn ADA Carol Moran. He was named an "honorary" detective and then tasked to work in the "Legal Lives" program as a therapy animal. Newsday also adds that the Brooklyn DA's office, which had given Fred a "Law Enforcement Appreciation Award" in May, said, "We had big plans for him." Fred, your detective work will not be forgotten.

Fred was found through Animal Care & Control of NYC - you can search for animals here.

No city-dwelling cat owner should be letting their cats out to explore the neighborhood for this very reason. This is truly reprehensible.

People should walk them on leashes.

will he get a policeman's burial?

did they at least use a clean shovel to scoop him up?

RIP Officer Fred the Cat. May you have doughnuts made out of fish in kitty heaven and get mad props from all police k9 crew. In my town of Bremerton WA there was a big public outcry when some meth head killed a police K9.

Nooooooo! I was kind of obsessed with the Fred the cat story. I can't believe he died. :(

I didn't read the links and should but isn't Fred's owner an ADA? Just goes to show you, The police will just use you to do their dirty work. Where was Fred's ghost?
Especially if you're a minority.
OK, some of what I wrote was in Jest only because Fred Deserves better.
Fred, You now can catch all the mice you want. You deserve it.

Fred, could you do one more case for us from the grave? Could you find out who in the hell is sticking pins in ham and leaving it in Central Park to kill our other fuzzy friends?

Poor Fred.

And he only had another week until he was going to retire! Why?! Whyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!

Mendoza! MENDOZAAAAAA!!! (pan upwards to pouring rain and thunder and lightning)

Wow I have been somewhat obsessed with Fred since his heroic story broke.
Who the hell let's their cat run out on the street nevermind a honorary detective of a cat? This cat was genuis! Here's hoping he has many lives left on his life line.

Speaking of famous kitties, how is Molly? Have their been any updates on Molly?

nooo! aww..
poor fred..

its tough to put a cat on a leash..i admit i tried this once and the cat first sniffed the grass and then took off like a wild beast on fire..it did a cat pop-a-wheelie and then ran..
thank god it came back..

Who cares about Molly!? Fred catches criminals and stupid Molly gets herself trapped in the wall. Maybe she's stuck there again, hopefully permanently this time.

R.I.P. Fred

Fred's death was no accident. Clearly this was retribution.

Yeah, blame the drive (*rolls eyes*). Everyone knows these cats go racing down the streets, disregarding all traffic laws and pedestrians. You know how you get your freshdirect and precious Amazon deliveries? Cars, not cats.

Isn't killing a police officer a felony? That driver should got to jail for life!

Astoriette did bring up an interesting comment because I know in other municipalities that assaulting a K9 officer is actually a felony (not felony murder but is a more severe version animal cruelty). That said, it would be interesting to see who the person who let the cat out was and whether they are now on expired meter patrol.

Poor Fred. R.I.P.
When I read the story, I felt awfully sad. Cats do slip out, though, they are wily creatures. Maybe Fred saw a crime or something, and was trying to catch a baddie. Though I wouldn't rule out retribution, as pointed out by Bubba.

First Hal...
Now Fred...

What animal heros do we have left?

Some might suggest that guy who's been wandering around central park, but he's such a turkey.

Has anyone here successfully trained a cat for a leash? I've heard you can do it if you start it as a kitten.

Two of my cats have been taken out on a leash. They don't really walk, like, you can't walk them down the street and let them poop and stuff, but they hang out and sniff things. Oh, and they eat grass, they like to eat grass and smell bugs. It's fun. We do this from time to time. It makes them happy.

I believe the Newsday story said that the "ASS" DA Carol Moran let Fred slip out to meet his maker because she was tending to some senior d*gs! Lesson learned: Never let a d*g person be responsible for who was obviously an exceptional if coincidentally famous feline. Hssssssssssssss!

This was no accident. Fred has lots of enemies.

Carol Moran, you should be ashamed of yourself! Fine, take your elderly dogs outside... but you should have made sure the cats are safe inside the house before you opened the friggin' door! Obviously, intelligence testing isn't a requirement for a job as an ADA, but it SHOULD BE required for pet owners!

Freddie's dead, that's what I said...

Poor Fred had a beautiful future. So sad.

I think a bust of Fred should be put outside NYPD HQ, and a street should be named after him.
