READINGS: Mark Helprin, author of the whimsical and weird Freddy and Fredericka (reviewed on Gothamist) will be reading from the novel at the 7th Ave Barnes & Noble in Brooklyn. We suspect the witty parts will be even more witty when read in a British accent, so head on down. - Krissa Corbett Cavouras
7pm // Barnes & Noble [267 7th Ave. in Park Slope] // Free
THEATER: As the behemoth Fringe Festival stands up, the tiny powerhouse Ice Factory festival http://www.sohothinktank.org/icefactory.html stands down with its last production of the summer, Michael Voyer and Timothy Haskell's Jaded Assassin. Touted as the "world's first original action play," it has over an hour of near-pure fight choreography in the service of a story of a woman who has to save her world from the gods' curse brought down on it by the ruling class. You might want to sneak in some popcorn. - Mallory Jensen
Tonight through Sunday, 8pm // Ohio Theater [66 Wooster St] // Tickets via Smarttix
MOVIE: River Flicks, one of the many outdoor summer movie series, is following their "badass" theme and shows Goldfinger tonight. Grab a blanket and get ready for an old Bond fave.
8:30pm // Hudson River Park, Pier 54 // Free
Ahh. Ryan Gosling. He's about 2/3 the reason why we watch The Notebook so much. Tonight, catch him in Half Nelson where he plays a Brooklyn middle school teacher/addict. The screenwriters, directors and Brooklynites, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, will be there for a little Q&A after the screening. Sadly, Gosling will not.
7pm // BAM Rose Cinema [30 Lafayette Ave., Fort Greene // $10
MUSIC: Tonight's lineup at the Annex sounds like a movie we once saw. A Place to Bury Strangers and Some Candy perform at the venues Death Disco night.
10:30pm // The Annex [Orchard St] // $5

Mark Helprin was raised in the U.S. and the British West Indies. He now lives in Charlotesville, VA and speaks with an uninflected American accent. For a 60-year-old, he looks absurdly young. Actually, maybe he just sent an assistant to the Park Slope reading last night.
Helprin doesn't have a British accent. He was raised in the U.S. and the British West Indies. Nonetheless, his accent is completely uninflected. Even a four-year stint in Boston didn't harm his locution.
