Last Night's Action: A Warm Homecoming

2006_04_smetslogo.jpg-Mets 3 Padres 2: It was the perfect homecoming for Mike Piazza and Mets’ fans. After giving a huge ovation to the former face of the franchise, the Shea faithful got to watch the new face of the franchise, David Wright, collect two RBI’s and propel New York to victory. As if there was any doubt left that a new era has arrived at Shea, Billy Wagner came in and preserved the one-run victory.

-White Sox 6 Yankees 5 (11 innings): Even the best fail some of the time. Mariano Rivera gave up the tying run in the ninth and Chicago won it on a Jermaine Dye single in the eleventh. Rivera should have had more of a cushion to work with, but the Yankees failed to score with a runner on third and only one out in their half of the ninth. Luckily, for New York, the Red Sox lost to the lowly Royals so they remain two games up.

-Staten Island 2 Broolyn 1 (10 innings): The Baby Bombers struck back when Mitchell Hillgoss singled in the winning run with one out in the tenth. The win leaves the Cyclones with a one-game lead in the division.

-NFL Names Goodell Commissioner: The 47-year old New Yorker was unanimously selected on the fifth ballot and will begin a five-year contract immediately.
