Return of the Fake WTC Coin

2005_08_wtccoin.jpgGothamist was happily in the middle of watching four hours of The Dog Whisperer (Will and Jada's dog Luigi hangs out with Cesar and the dogs when the movie stars are out of town!) over the weekend when we saw this horrible ad: The 2001-2006 World Trade Center Gold and Silver Clad Commemorative Coin. Oh, yes, a coin claiming to be mined from silver "found under tons" of Ground Zero debris is being hawked yet once again. Back in 2004, National Collector's Mint marketed a Freedom Tower September 11 coin, which is probably worth something now that the Freedom Tower has been totally redesigned, only for Attorney General Eliot Spitzer to halt the company's actions. While Spitzer's suit didn't dispute the claim of whether or not the silver was from Ground Zero, he was able to fine National Collector's Mint for claiming it was pure silver - when the coin was really just silverplated. The anniversary coin is "silver clad" and features a WTC skyline that pops out - all in all, it's pretty horrifying. Let's hope Spitzer can find something to nail them on this time.

Update: Dan at Uneasy Silence YouTube'd Lewis Black discussing the first WTC coin on the Daily Show back in 2004. Thanks, Dan!

I just sent a note to this company telling them how appalling this is. there is a "contact us" link on their website, I recommend others do the same. Disgusting how people will stoop so low to make a quick buck.

Why is it that horrific tragedy has the tendency to sometimes bring out the worst impulses in people? For further examples, see exhibit A: "The Second Term of George W. Bush".

here is the email for their customer service:

Anyone have the email for Eliot Spitzer's office?

do people actually buy crap like this? a pop-up coin? i'm more insulted by the gaudiness of the design.

First off, this is an incredibly offensive product.

Secondly, I think this is the company that sells coins which they all but claim to be official government issue coins, except if you look at the small print.

And finally, it begs the question, who the hell buys this crap?

I saw the ad and only paid a glance attention to it but heard the coin was made from silver found at WTC.
What silver? All that scrap metal bought and melted down?
Anyway, if someone wants it, it's OK with me.
I'm really numb to the 911 event and don't pay much attention to it. Am I callous? Then, so be it.
People are using 911 as an excuse anyway, an excuse to bitch, an excuse to say I've been there, so what?
I've seen combat, you don't see me acting all superior.

A: It's repugnant and marketed to vile, illiterate people (those are the buyers). Thank you for the customer service email link, which, if you missed it the first time, is:

csweb@ncmintonline.com

B: To where'd they get this: Just saying "I've seen combat" implies you think you've seen worse than 9/11 and are somehow superior. Well, you've seen combat, so what--that was your fucking choice, so live with it. Combat has happened every day for over four years, but if the actions of Sept. 11 were repeated every day, I think it's possible America would be paying attention and doing more than putting stupid fucking magnets on their cars. But then again, they did elect the war-mongering chimp to a second term...

awwww, poooor baby.
Excuses, excuses.
I love this coin and it's going to be a collectors item now that you're trying to remove it from the market.
Get over yourself. Please.
