Gothamist PSA: Boat Safe, Boat Sober.

2006_08_06_boats.jpg

To any of you crazy kids who ever plan on operating a boat in New York waters in the future, a hint of seemingly obvious advice: Don't drink.

Starting today a recently passed law kicks in and the penalties for operating a boat while drunk "will get you the same stiff penalties as an arrest for drunken driving." That seems reasonable enough to us. But we can't say that "28 percent of fatal boating accidents involved alcohol in 2004" is the strongest statistic we've ever heard quoted in favor of a new law. Still, good idea.

So folks, try to remember: Boat Safe, Boat Sober.
