Did You See a Manatee in the River?

2006_08_manatee.jpg

We can't believe it. There apparently was a manatee swimming up the Hudson since Saturday, and we had no idea. Observers spotted him at 23rd Street, then at 125th Street. We suppose he continued north, though it would have been cool if he turned around to venture over the Boat Basin and give us a shout. Gothamist will have to head to the New York Aquarium for our manatee fix, instead.

Last year, a baby seal was lost in Brooklyn. Sometimes harp seals like to hang out on city docks to molt. And at the beginning of the year, a whale was swimming in the Thames.

I'm a great lover of the New York Aquarium, but they don't have any manatees. However, they DO have the friendliest walruses you'll ever meet.

...was the manatee here to write a Family Guy episode?

That's not a manatee, it's a walrus, in that photo (look at the tail!). And there are NO manatees at the NY Aquarium.

yeah manatee is here for the new season of family guy. the rest were killed because of the previous horrible season.

I rowed for Columbia a few years back, and a harp seal made it all the way to our dock on the Harlem River. Crazy.

A few years ago, someone let their pet alligator loose in the Scajacquada Creek, in Buffalo. It was about 3' long. Honest!
I think that after they trapped him, some alligator farm down in Florida ended up with him.
