If there is one thing about which Jews and Muslims agree, it’s that pigs are filthy animals. Both religions dictate that their adherents shall not eat nothin’ that ain’t got sense enough to disregard its own feces. But, as Vincent Vega pointed out so succinctly, bacon tastes goooood.
Sorry Rabbi Kahn, but I'm with Vincent Vega on this one. And when I’ve got that deliciously sinful hankering for bacon, I head straight to Peter Luger’s Steakhouse. I wish I could order their bacon along with a nice, fat porterhouse, but cab drivers don’t make as much money as they used to thanks to the price of gasoline. So I crossed the Williamsburg Bridge yesterday afternoon with my friend Matthew to order the $8.50 burger that they serve at lunch. But I was really there for the bacon.

Just a couple of years back, the bacon at Luger’s was a secret. Only those in the know would tell their waiter to bring them Canadian bacon as an appetizer, while everyone else was faced with options like a tasteless Cesar salad or a plain slice of tomato with onion. Nowadays, the secret is out, and bacon is right there on the menu.
If an appetizer is supposed to start your mouth watering, the thick slab of bacon that is plated without garnish at Luger’s is ideal. The smell alone does the trick. And each bite is like a journey to heaven and back. The edges are slightly charred and crispy. The center is fatty without being too chewy or greasy. Some bites are tender beyond human comprehension. Some bites are juicy like I never even knew bacon could be. And some of the burnt edge bites start out dry and smoky until a few chews turn the meat even juicier than the juicy bites.

As if the bacon isn’t tasty enough on its own, the famous Luger’s steak sauce compliments the pork flavor just as well as it does the porterhouse. So order a second slab, slice it up, and place it atop your burger along with plenty of steak sauce. You may very well have a religious experience akin to achieving Shangri La. Just don’t tell your imam or your rabbi.

Peter Luger's Steak House, 178 Broadway, Brooklyn, 718-387-7400

THAT'S a slice of bacon?!?! It looks like it's the size of some steaks by themselves. I think I had a heart attack just looking it. I'm sooooo going to Peter Luger's.
That is some awesome bacon!
Old-school New Yorkers will tell you that the best way to enjoy Luger's bacon is to fold up into one of their onion rolls and then slap some sauce on them. If you want, order the tomato and onion salad, and throw those on the roll as well.
how much was that lunch?
i had bacon during a luger's lunch last week and the picture alone had my mouth watering! who needs proust's madelines when you have luger's bacon???!!!
Wow. That looks fantastic. Must Go!
is there a line to get into peter luger's or do you just go in without a reservation?
I had my first Luger's bacon this past New Year's Eve. Yes, it's as good as it looks and totally worth it. After that meal, however, I had to detox off red meat for about a month.
Jesus Cristo,
No line to get in at lunch, especially in the summer when things are slower. Reservations are a must at dinner year round but they only serve the burger until 3pm. The burger is $8.50 and the bacon is $2.75 a slab. Way cheaper just a couple years back, but still totally worth it.
just a big tasty plate o death.
luger's sucks. it's so past prime. i don't get the whole "intentional surly waiter" thing. do i have to tip normally to get a waiter with the attitute? How that is party of any charm is beside me. There are so many better places to get great quality steaks in the city. There's a reason the place is filled with B&T, the vinny's from bay ridge and the elderly who truck in from Long Island for a big night in the city. they just don't know any different. It's not 1970 anymore.
HR,
The waiter probably has attitude toward YOU because you're a schmuck. You human paraquat.
And what makes you think Luger's prime was 1970? They opened in 1887. Peaked at age 83?
"...a big night in the city"? You are aware that Luger's is in Brooklyn, right? And that surly waiter thing is overblown - our waiter was great on NYE, on a night that I'm sure is filled with stressful service.
Now this is meat. Not like that gray stuff in sopping wet buns a few days ago.
They've always treated us well. We have at least two family dinners there a year. When we sat in the family area it was much better, something about sitting with other tables having their family dinner.
Sure you'll get some wannabe's but that's what my sister in law from Sweden wanted to see.
The only thing better than Luger's bacon is eating Luger's bacon off the thighs of one of those bikini chicks from Little Odessa. Mouth Watering good times!
Just to address those "elderly who truck in from Long Island", Brooklyn is technically a part of Long Island. I'm pretty sure neither "Vinny" nor Gammy needed a "B" or a "T" to get there.
Oops, I just drooled on my computer after seeing that first shot. Hungry Cabbie, you make me ravenous, and I love you for it...hurts so good
Luger's is King, but I went to 'Quality Meats' recently and was wowed by the Bone Marrow!
