Free Iced Coffee Alert!

2006_08_food_starbucks.jpgYeah, it's damn hot. But Starbucks is pitching in to help us cool off today by offering free iced coffee and iced cafe con leche at participating locations from 1-3 pm today. There's nothing that a cold shot of caffeine can't fix, really.

The standard rules apply: "Valid for one drink per customer. While supplies last." Now, the real question is whether or not you want to venture outside.

Visit their website to find a Starbucks near you.

I'm sure they'll be huge lines, for something that usually costs, what, 3-4 dollars? I've never understood the huge lines that form on "free" days- guys, you can have Ben & Jerry's anyday, with no wait, for a very low price. It's rarely worth it.

Starbucks is an overpriced, transnational that punishes employees for trying to unionize.

Boycott Starbucks!!!

hrrrm, their website says nothing about free drinks (as per the img in the post) either it's a) no longer offered, hrrm it's not 1pm yet b) it won't be there until 1pm and gothamist is so damn cool they get starbucks ads before starbucks c) you have to physically go to the store or look outside to see if the line is forming outside the door to know if your location is participating in this freeness

#3 Why don't you just call the store ahead of time to see if they're participating? And maybe it's just a NYC thing to offer the free iced coffee.

In the fine-print of the ad is says nyc metro area - I just got my freebie at the 23rd & 3rd location and there was no crazy line though a few frazzeled baristas. Tip well, they didn't plan this marketing ploy.

I'm surprised you didn't notice that the ad occupied the entire front page of AM New York this morning.

We got ours at the one on 42nd. Line wasn't too bad when we arrived, by as we were leaving it was out the door and to the street. Nuts.

It was fun. People were in good spirits. Breaks up the day. Who cares if you have to wait in line for a little while?

Yup...it's happening in the heart of Greenwich Village.

in union square we got free muffins too!

ok so wait a sec.. you want me to stop using the internet, pick up the phone, call someone... forget this.. I am going to go across the street and put this rumor to rest.

Avoid large starbucks or places near large crowds.

I was at the one at Rockefeller Center and the "line" turned into a mob...and got elbowed a couple of times as people pushed their way up to the counter... [sigh]

rita: stop messing with our heads about the free muffins.

Hey #2, Starbucks gives us FREE ICE COFFEES! What has anyone gotten from the unions and anti-globalization cartel lately? Up with BIG corporations, down with corrupted teamsters!

I got mine in LIC near the Kaufman Studios right after 1 pm, no line. I saw others in the neighborhood with Starbucks clear plastic containers that the iced coffee came in. I even made it back to my office 5 blocks away with the ice cubes intact.

whatever happened to that crazy melted chocolate drink they had a few years ago? a hot mug of that would really hit the spot in my chilly office, bitches.

Starbucks is truly evil, giving people beverages laced with caffeine on a day where hydration is key. Stupid, just stupid.

The Chinatown starbucks at Centre and Canal ran out of ice by 2:00. Nothing like a free leukwarm coffee on a hot day!

Not to loook a gift horse in the mouth, but I kind of would have hoped Starbucks would have had their act a little more together. If you're trumpeting your "free iced coffee!" promotion, you might consider that you will need a good amount of ice..

If you're OK with drinking that expensive latte after knowing the facts, then keep on sipping, Paris Hilton.

Starbucks has said it will pay the lowest possible construction wages at its new Douglas County, Nev., roasting plant. Wages falling below area standards drag down every worker's paycheck.
Starbucks' new plant will pump 100 tons of new pollutants into Nevada/Lake Tahoe air.
Starbucks just scored almost $2 million in corporate welfare tax-cut freebies which must be made up by Nevada taxpayers to subsidize community services which Starbucks will require (such as police and fire protection, roads and schools).
Starbucks' out-of-state general contractor was fined $56,000 by the Nevada State Contractors Board for illegally operating without a license.
For more than two years, Starbucks stonewalled on signing a contract with workers at its Kent, Washington, roasting facility despite employees winning two majority votes in federally supervised elections. (Kent, Wash., maintenance mechanics and technicians ratified a first contract on October 27, 2001. For more information, contact Rene Jankiewicz at International Union of Operating Engineers Local 286.)
Workers have filed local, state and federal charges of intimidation, coercion, discrimination, health & safety violations and physical assault regarding the Washington state roasting plant.
Starbucks Washington managers have filed suit alleging that they were forced to work unpaid overtime.

margaret,
hate starbucks all you want, but they're out there being good capitalists. what are you doing? love it or leave it, toots.

The one on Third Ave at 50th ran out of ice around 1:45, according to my coworker. I'm glad I didn't bother leaving my (only somewhat, this week) air conditioned office.

i was eating lunch across the street from my starbux when i saw gaggles of people walking from that direction...suspiciously all with the same tall cup of coffee...i proceeded to investigate (they couldnt all have just magically gotten the same thing) and got my free coffee after only about 7 min wait. very nice promo on their part, i approve of this heat-related generosity
