Idiot of the Week (or Month): Duaner Sanchez

2006_08_ssanchez.jpgGothamist likes to eat and can understand getting the late night munchies. But when we're on the road for business late on a Sunday night in a nice hotel that has room service and we get a food stipend, we usually order in. Apparently, if you're Duaner Sanchez in Miami, that's not what you do. Some details have been released about the early Monday morning accident the Mets reliever was involved in. Sanchez, his younger brother, and a "female friend" were all in a taxi when it was hit by a Crown Victoria on I-95 at 1:44 a.m. It's nice to know that the Mets don't have a curfew. As an aside - who knew that non-cops and old people drove Crown Vics (we assume that the driver wasn't a senior citizen as it was after their bedtimes). A Florida Highway Patrol lieutenant said that the accident could have been a lot worse for everyone involved, "That time of night is when you have the real horrendous wrecks."

After Sanchez injured his shoulder in a car accident early Monday morning, the Mets were forced to trade Xavier Nady to the Pirates to replace him, a move that wouldn't have been necessary if Sanchez didn't have a craving for late night Dominican food. Note to Jose Reyes and Pedro Martinez: if you have cravings like your fellow Dominican, please don't go on a futile late-night search in a city you don't live in. Thank you.

Yesterday Sanchez had season ending surgery on his shoulder and the expectation is that he'll be ready by Spring Training. It probably goes without saying that the Mets won't be going out much when they're on the road the rest of the season, off day or not.

Good writing, Tien. Good writing.

user-pic

Wow! I mean, wow. Talk about adding insult to injury.

This might be the most absurd thing I've ever read on Gothamist. You mean to tell me you're blaming the guy for being in a car accident, heck, in a car accident in which he was not operating either vehicle. Ferchrissakes, he was in a taxi that was hit by another vehicle that swerved across four lanes. Now I understand this is the usual method of driving for our neighbors in Jersey, but you must admit that the particular event in question was somewhat of an irregular and unforseeable event.

Anyway, God forbid someone wants to go out and grab a midnight snack. We've all been there and done that. South Florida isn't exactly Manhattan where you can find a 24 hour deli on every corner. More often then not you have to drive to where you want to go.

Furthermore, regarding your comment about a curfew, the next day (Monday) was an off day, so whether or not the Mets have a curfew policy (which I doubt and which seems somewhat excessive when you consider that baseball players are adults and need not be treated like children--do they need to be in bed by midnight so that they can be up bright early to play a game at 7 pm?) it can hardly be expected to apply on the night be before a day off.

user-pic

agreed- it's a big stretch to call someone an idiot for being the victim of a car accident. leaving a hotel late at night for something to eat is hardly an idiotic act.

user-pic

Tien,

YOU are the idiot of the week for listening to Mad Dog Russo on WFAN today and the plagurizing/regurgitating his ridiculous take on this situation.

Willie Randolph said there is no curfew on the nights prior to off days, in fact some players traveled to their homes on the off day.

user-pic

Wow, I've read a lot of stupid things on Gothamist, but this is one of the worst. He's an idiot because he didn't order crappy hotel food? And why should the Dominicans take note? Are they the only ones who would be an "idiot" like this?

user-pic

This has been a long time coming, but this is it for me and Gothamist. In the last year you have gone from the must-read New York blog to something that resembles the pathetic rantings of a 72-year-old Queens resident. Bands of the week stink. Concert reviews don't really review the concert. While Jen still does a great job, due to content volume many typos and mistakes get through. The weekend opinion stuff is great - but I can go to the times for that. Your reports on building tend to the absurd and alarmist and you guys eat your foot at least twice a day. The resulting agita is no longer worth the simple click of the mouse it would take to read you. I suggest you bring the steady hand of Garth on to work with Jen during the week and stop making every post some inflammatory attempt to gain attention. I wish you guys all the best. Go back to your strengths.

user-pic

Idiot? A bit harsh, don't you think? An idiot is Gus Ferrote spraining his neck by bashing his head into a wall during a TD celebration. An idiot is the Grammatica kicker spraining his knee while jumping up and down in celebration of a field goal. Duaner Sanchez is not an idiot for getting hungry at 2am the night before an off day. When I go out of town on business, I try to avoid food service. never mind the cost, I want something local and good.

user-pic

Idiot of the Week (or Month): tien mao

user-pic

bad post Tien. but i still like you gothamist. typos and all.

user-pic

easily the most mean-spirited gothamist post ever. taking hints from gawker?

user-pic

Good spot, Bob. Anyone who takes Mad Dog's side on ANYTHING is a moron. Way to really think this one through, Tien.

Accidents are just that...ACCIDENTS. This has nothing to do with poor judgement in seeking out late-night foodstuffs in Miami. It could've easily happened in broad daylight, after a workout.

Also, is Gothamist going to have another Idiot of the Week next Wednesday? If so, can I nominate you?

user-pic

You can't really blame Duaner for what he did. However, I can understand if Tien and other hardcore Mets fans are short-sightedly angry because they had to give up Nady.

There are a lot of non-stereotypical Crown Vic drivers. Some want a big safe American car, some want a cheap car (since there are a lot of old police units out there), some want a car with "cop shocks, cop tires, cop brakes, cop engine" - which has a lot of performance.

Back to the accident, it was a freak thing and hopefully the Mets will not be negatively effected.

user-pic

Agreed. Stupid post. Really stupid post.

I agree with all of the above. You want an idiot of the week? How about Derek Jeter? A perfume line? Give me a f'ing break. Babe Ruth is throwing up in his dead mouth.

user-pic

I love you Duaner! Don't listen to Tien.

What are you a Yankees fan?

Did you call Tom Glavine an idiot when he lost his front teeth in cab going to the game, because he didn't take the 7 train like Ron Darling used to to the game?

I don't care if I find Dirty Sanchez at Katz's at 3 in the morning before a game as long as he keeps throwing 96 and inside. He's a LATE innings guy too, braniac.

I'd already mentally tuned out Gothamists's sports opinions, they come off like pedestrian ramblings from Brooklyn hipster wannabes, but that too does it for me. And yeah, what's with all the typos and grammar mistakes? Are you TRYING not to be taken seriously at all? You might want to consider editing your original title dude, it's really really bad form.

Now if you had a clue you might redirect people to the Duaner Sanchez GET WELL THREAD

http://www.metsblog.com/blog/_archives/2006/8/1/2186336.html#690570

user-pic

I could see how this might offend Bostonist, where the city shuts down at 1, but as a blog in support of all-things-NY, how can Gothamist scold Mr. Sanchez for not being in bed before midnight?

A curfew? No thanks, mom...

Get well soon Duaner!

user-pic

My God, what a stupid post. Who's the idiot of the week going to be next week? Some guy who went out to walk his dog at (gasp!) 7am and had a bowling ball from from an airplane and kill him? Oh man, that guy was a total MORON! Who walks their dog BEFORE they go to work? That was almost as dumb as the women who was carjacked while driving her car, IN THE AFTERNOON! Who does that?!! Ha!

user-pic

I agree with all of the above. Just because hes a highly paid baseball player does not mean he should stay home after 10pm and hide under the bedsheets to avoid being injured. These accidents happen, and in this case he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, by no fault of his by the way.

And hell, do you know how many late night White Castle/Taco bell trips people make? Some people need to feed the need, even at 1am.

Shame on you Mr Mao

user-pic

Wow this post really does take the cake for idiocy and insensitivity.

How dare Duaner have the nerve to get hit by a drunk driver!

How dare he take a cab at 2 in the morning to grab a bite to eat when THERE WAS NO GAME SCHEDULED THE NEXT DAY!

And I have no idea what you were trying to insinuate with the whole "female friend" thing. I guess if you're a professsional athlete you're an idiot if you have an acquaintance of the opposite sex?

The implicit racism was a nice touch too - oh those crazy Dominicans and their wacky cravings!

What if Duaner was seriously hurt or killed in the accident? Would he still be an idiot then? If Gothamist had any shred of deceny they would take this post down and issue an apology.

And Tien do us all a favor and sitck to writing psots about blueberry crepes and hipster kitten shows in Greenpoint because its painfully obvious you know jack shit about sports.

user-pic

worst blog post ever.

user-pic

"if you have cravings like your fellow Dominican, please don't go on a futile late-night search in a city you don't live in."

Yeah that was a little off the deep end. If he tapped into his Mexican inner self, he couldve directed the Cab driver to head to Taco bell, thus avoiding the crash and saving his season.

I thought the Glavine taxi thing happened when he was in a cab from LGA or JFK.

user-pic

idiot or not, i bet there's a stipulation in his contract that does not allow galavanting in outside club cars.

user-pic

Seriously, can you please fire this fuckhead already? Tien's posts are always worthless and generally mean. This one just goes right into racist.

Yeah... he was going from LGA.... to Shea Stadium. So technically he would not have taken the 7 train, but I just love the bachelor Mets, both 80s and even today, who live in Manhattan and take the 7 out to the game. That's old-school. It's what NY baseball should be, you MIGHT see tonight's starter on the same dirty subway train you take out.

Anyway, back to the point, they still haven't issued an apology, pretty fucking stupid...

user-pic

i was wondering why i was less inclined with every passing day to check in with gothamist. this post confirms it: the writing has gone WAY downhill. tien's take sounds like sanchez planned to get into a car wreck. give me a fucking break. a guy gets hungry and goes out with some friends in search of food. that hardly makes him an idiot.

i wish we could go back to a time when jen wrote all the posts, with jake chiming in from time to time.

user-pic

i agree with the majority of comments above. i stewed on this post all evening, and woke up this morning even more infuriated. racist, insensitive, and wholly unintelligent commentary here guys. you blew it.

user-pic

just an ugly, ugly post..........if you can't figure it out yet, the comments above may be thought of as a curtain call for a retraction..........

user-pic

If the dirty dog pulled a MEL GIBSON then I would be furious, but he didn't. He was in a cab and the cabbie was driving safely. A DRUNK DRIVER hit them and caused the accident and injury to happen. The only thing Sanchez could have done was possibly wear a seatbelt which might have injured him anyway if the crash was severe enough.

Dude, I'm mad about the Nady trade too, but this post has no merit.

user-pic

Gothamist, you guys missed the real story! Isn't it three occurrences that make a trend? First Glavine had his teeth knocked out by a crazy taxi driver. Now Duaner is taken out in a taxi accident. But best of all, the Mets recently announced they're partnering with a water taxi company.

Ironic? Or more than mere coincidence?

user-pic

You guys hear that sound?

That's Gothamist's credibility flushing down the toilet...

user-pic

Tien Mao should change his/her name to Mao ZeDUMB

user-pic

I just think that the headline was the biggest mistake here...the rest of the post is standard "fan taking an opinion" fare - which i consider to be part of the point of when Gothamist covers sports.

i think the problem here is that it was a minority opinion, even among fans.

Part of the fun of this blog thing is to see an opinion made and subsequently attacked. And to those who would actually give up on this whole site...come on.

user-pic

He's an idiot for getting hit by a drunk driver? Or for not staying in his hotel room at all times? This is the dumbest thing I've ever read on this website. Form your own opinions, don't regurgitate Chris Russo's.

user-pic

There's a huge difference between having an opinion and writing an inane, pointlessly inflammatory and borderline racist post bereft of any semblence of logic or sensitivity.

And yes, if Gothamist continues to employ idiot hacks like Tien, that IS a reason to give up on the entire site.

The problem with Gothamist is that there is a repeated tendency to make these kind of gratuitous sweeping statements. I stopped reading Gothamist for at least three months after the whole 'Patti Smith should die already so she stops hogging Bowery Ballroom every New Years Eve so that Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah [or insert crappy trendy band here] can't play there" post in December.

Essentially I like what Gothamist does but I do stop reading for a while when stuff like this happens, because it's not an exception. That's my problem with this.

That, and that it was stupid, pointless and racist.

Every aspect of the idiocy of this post has been covered already, but I'd like to join the chorus of people nominating Tien Mao for the next Idiot of the Week/Month.

I loved the X-Man as much as the next guy, but how you can possibly fault Duaner for riding in a taxi that got into an accident is just beyond all comprehension. Think next time.

user-pic

Come on people. Wheres the forgiveness?

Believe in Jeebus Christ

user-pic

What a ridiculous post! I read Gothamist every day and this has to be the first idiotic article I have read on here.

I am not a sports fan at all, but I don't see how getting into a car accident because you are going out in a CAB to look for a late-night snack is something you can be blamed for.

Does the writer have any anti-Dominican agenda here? (No i am not Dominican) I am baffled by the logic and intelligence level of the writer (Tien) here.

Is there an editor? I normally value Gothamist precisely because it usually stays at a certain level editorially that is sadly lacking in this post.

Tien's no Yankee fan, speaking as a Yankee fan.

But Yankee/Met stuff aside (Mets still in third place in AL East, BTW), I gotta stick up for Tien here.

Don't get me wrong, I don't necessarily agree with him, but I'm not sure disagreeing with someone over baseball is a good excuse for calling them an idiot or a racist. I posted something on here a couple of weeks ago that went against the conventional wisdom (about Project Runway, the only thing more inane than the Yankee/Met thing) and was greeted by comments ranging from "you're stupid" (not on that day) to "your blog sucks" (duh, it's a blog) to "your kid is ugly and takes lousy photos" (little over the line).

Blog rage... catch it.

So c'mon people... lighten up.

And Tien, dude, the Mets were going to win the NL East by 1,000 games and then lose in the first round to a team with pitching whether Sanchez was there or nor.

user-pic

Um, yeah, like it's his fault his cab got in an accident. That's really great. Who the hell cares what time it was - and what is a curfew going to do?! Blame the victim for living his life, why don't we? Lovely!!

user-pic

bigotry is a horrific human creation especially when you act like you did not mean it. I hope you learn soon and grow up sooner. Also, if and when your family member gets in an accident and get seriously injured dont get upset if someone calls them an idiot.

user-pic

Tim N. -

You're an idiot for completely missing the point. People aren't berating Tien because they're "disagreeing over baseball" but because Tien is ostensibly placing the blame on Sanchez for getting in a car accident while in the back seat of a taxi. I think "idiot" or "moron" perfectly describes anyone who holds that awful opinion.

Syzygy... thanks, you proved my point.

user-pic

Sorry, I know this post isn't about this, but I smell a Yankees fan who's a little peeved that his team is only in first place by half a game...and by the way as long as you're counting, the Mets would be in *second* place if they were in the AL East, one entire half-game behind your Yanks. But beyond that, spare me the complaint about what division your team is in...the Mets have been stuck in a crazy-strong division for the better part of a decade while the Yanks have had who to contend with? The Devil Rays? Baltimore? Toronto?? And do me a favor and stop predicting the future wrt the playoffs. Have a little respect! We respect you when your team gets there, so the least you can do is not be an ass about who's going to lose in the first round!

user-pic

If all you hate Tien's wacky opinions so much, why don't you start your own blog and give your own measured, even-handed, boring, inoffensive, white bread opinions every day? See how many hits you get.

It was a tongue-in-cheek post. What do you expect from a guy who is fully obsessed with The Warriors?

user-pic

In a word, ouch.

user-pic

You're right Paco, I forgot that Gothamist was created for the sole purpose of getting internet hits and prides itself on posting any kind of callous, inflammatory diatribe it can get its hands on. I hear tomorrow they will begin showing celebrity autopsy pictures and random snippets of hard core porn. Whatever keeps them coming back right? You probably think John Rocker is a swell guy too...

But I guess what amazes me even more is that Tien has written another post (about a ticket stub of all things...another provacative and groundbreaking story there..) without a retraction, apology, or even a simple response for this one...TRULY a class act. Tien, I hope you look back on this one day with great pride..with this brilliant piece of writing you've managed to convince tens of thousands of people across the internet that you are basically an ass.

Bravo man, well done.

user-pic

Gothamist gone too far,

I think this post expressed a totally ridiculous opinion. But why should Tien apologize? Do you think the Sanchez family is upset about this? Do you think anyone other than losers like us who spend time leaving obnoxious comments on Gothamist even care a bit?

This is about entertainment. And Tien's post, though nutty if you think what he is saying, was entertaining. I think that's all he, or anyone, is trying to do when they post on this free site.

Yes, Maia, they have the same record as the Sox, but then we have to look at the head to head tiebreaker... and is that really a stroll down memory lane that any Met fan wants to take? (Though far be it from me to say anything nice about the Sox, I'll leave that to others.)

Anywho, should you make it through the playoffs I wish you luck against the varsity.

user-pic

I have a new nomination - you Tien.

So if I go out late and get hit by a drunk, it is my fault? That is what you are basically saying.
The person in the car with the drunk is going to be in the hospotal for months, with steel rods in her legs thanks to her friend.

I hope to hell you never are put in the situation where you are the victim of an accident because you were out late.

user-pic

Wow, a New York-centered blog calling someone an "idiot" for being out at 2 on a night when he didn't have to work the next day.

You are quite the winner.

user-pic

Lol. Someone deleted my comment today calling Tien an idiot for calling a hamstring injury lame.

user-pic

I can understand the anger this guy has for what happened to this guy. He was an integral part of there team. One of the best relievers the Mets have. This was an accident plain & simple! On the other hand, In business you have players that you can come to depend on to get a particular job done. When something happens to one of your "cogs" It kind of throws your gameplan off. What happened to this guy again was an unfortunate accident that the team will now have to deal with . In Sanchez's defense you have to use the addage"Shit happens" ! There is something that goes with "Knowing your area" Did Sanchez know the conditions at that time weren't favorable? Did he care to think about that ? Probably not , I'm not suggesting that the Mets should have a curfew. After all these are Grown men able to make there own decisions on there own time! That's where it gets tricky, Did this guy think that something would happen that could have adverse effects on the teams future? I wouldn't be surprised if the Mets upper Management had something to say about this . They had to give up a big bat to "TRY" to fill the role this guy left in the void. Sofar so good.

user-pic

Come on guys. Tien's only on a fifth grade level of journalistic writing. Give him a break!

user-pic

Wow Tien thank you for opening my eyes. I am 99% less ignorant than I used to be thanks to you. Why? Because I now realize that I too have been an idiot of the week.

You see, once upon a time I decided to step outside of my house. And that's it! Could you believe how thoughtless and careless I was in doing so? I mean for godsake I could've been struck by lightning! Or a meteor could've fallen from the sky and hit me! And that could've really messed up my plans for the future. Thank god I wasn't as unfortunate as Duaner was.
