Busy Trade Deadline for Mets and Yankees

2004_06_smets.jpgHere’s the good news, the Mets bolstered their bullpen today. The bad news is, they had to. Last night Duaner Sanchez separated his shoulder in a taxi and will probably miss the rest of the season. So, New York went and traded Xavier Nady to Pittsburgh for Roberto Hernandez and Oliver Perez. The Mets then turned around and traded Perez to the Padres for Scott Linebrink.

Hernandez returns to New York and with the addition of Linebrink, gives the Mets three great setup options for Billy Wagner. With Nady gone, they may turn to Lastings Milledge to play right, but that is just speculation at this point. One thing’s for sure, the Mets need to stay away from taxis!

Update: WFAN is reporting that the trade between the Mets and the Padres for Linebrink fell through.

2004_06_syankees.jpgThe Yankees waited six months too long to trade Shawn Chacon, but still did pretty well. In exchange for Chacon and his 7.00 ERA, New York received Craig Wilson from Pittsburgh. Wilson can play first and the outfield and gives the Yankees a solid bat (267/.339/.478) to play either leftfield or first base.

Elsewhere around the majors, Greg Maddux and Julio Lugo are on their way to the Dodgers while Washington apparently didn’t trade Alfonso Soriano.

did the mets get linebrink overall?

while it would have been nice for the mets to pick up a starter, the performances from this weekend makes you think that might not be necessary. i guess time will tell whether or not that starter was needed. at least they didn't have to give up any prospect.s
