Ah, yet another thing to confirm the horrible bureaucracy in the Department of Education. The Post reports that a Bronx Science student is suing the school because they are stonewalling efforts to get her Bronx Science diploma. Maria Casal failed pre-calculus during her senior year, and was told that she would have to complete summer school if she wanted a Bronx Sci diploma - at graduation, she got a regular Regents diploma. So she went to summer school for the MQ7/8 class, but then it was cancelled after two days because there were only three students attending! According to her lawsuit, the other two students were allowed to complete the class by independent study (perhaps because they weren't seniors), but she wasn't. This just sounds crazy, which might be par for course with the DoE. But come on, an 18 year old who is willing and able to take summer school right before she goes off to college? That's heart!

how is she taking pre-calc in senior year? i thought that was a freshman course? additionally, how do you get accepted into a science school and fail pre-calc?! thats ridiculous
Just because you get in to a science school doesn't mean you know anything about math or science. I graduated Stuyvesant, and each year math and science courses were nothing but a struggle.
Which only futher goes to show why these schools are getting ridiculous. They should probably make them smaller to make sure kids who don't actually know math/science don't go there. Also, it wouldn't hurt if there were more comparable magnet schools that weren't science/math specialized.
um, pre-calc is generally a junior/senior class. not a freshman class.
ok, i took AP calc in junior year, so i assumed that i took pre-calc in freshman year...i could be wrong i suppose though...maybe i took it in sophmore year then...
This is an unfortunate situation, but isn't it mainly her own fault for failing the class in the first place? I don't think people that mess up should assume that other people/organizations will go out of their way to make it convenient to fix their mistakes. Such is life.
Yeah Tien, If I remember by BxSci yrs correctly, it was Sequential Math I, II, III and then Pre-Cal. But almost everyone skipped Sequential I & II. So you ended taking Sequential Math III, Precal, Cal and AP Cal.

As a Stuy alum, let me assure the Gothamist community that most of us ex-Stuy/Bx Sci/Bklyn Tech students, indeed, were pretty average when it came to science and math.
Nonetheless... Offering a graduating senior the summer school class she needs to get her diploma and then arbitrarily cancelling it? Way to go heartlessness!! Woo!
NYS recently changed the requirements. It now goes by a Math A and B program.
In a standard HS, freshmen year you take Math A, sophomore AB, and junior year B. Senior year you could be taking pre-calc or Calc, depending on the student.
This kid obviously had a great case of senioritis, attempting to coast her senior year, but failed in more ways than one.
Anyone want to join my class action lawsuit against purveyors of frivolous lawsuits?
It isn't frivilous, I actually know her and during the last half of the year she actually tried real hard to get all her shit together. As if Sci hasn't already recieved enough bad publicity over the years. Also the numbers being given to the press differ greatly from what the real numbers are.
oh well. She should have done the work during the year when it mattered, and if she couldn't get it together and high school is such a challenge, perhaps she isn't ready to graduate after all.
it was her fault for failing the class. You don't fail because you dont understand it...you fail a class when you cut too many times or never do homework
