Park Slope Jogging Mommy and Baby Mugged

This leaves us amazed: A woman jogging in Prospect Park with her baby was attacked by a gang of youths, who robbed her of her iPod. Luckily, that's all they took and the mother seems fine (she was hit from behind), but what makes the crime crazy is that the youths seem to be 12 years old. Twelve years old! The Post reports that Laurie Maher-Samra was jogging near Nellie's Lawn on the East Drive when the attack occured at 1PM. Maher-Samra said, "There were people around. It was weird. It was a bold move. As a mom of a 7-month old, I should be able to walk with him in the park." A few months ago, there were more stories about "wolf packs" of teens terrorizing people in Prospect Park, but the NYPD said they weren't really an issue. Still, we wonder if our readers have noticed a change in police presence at the park, because if mommies and their babies aren't safe, that pretty much accounts for 70% of Park Slope's population.

Last year, someone mugged a mom walking in Central Park with her 3 month old baby. And there was a murder - still unsolved - near Nellie's Lawn at the Vale of Cashmere in April.

We recently saw a man bathing himself in the sprinker feature at Vanderbilt playground. We were specifically horriifed by the fact that he appeared to be washing blood off his hands.

At the same time a group of young teen boys were chasing each other and throwing things at each other right in the tot lot where the babies play.

What's going on with the park? Summer madness is my best guess. Kids out of school and a heat wave...bad news.

There are some parts of Prospect Park that are offlimits but most of the park is Gorgeous.
I like Prospect Park better than Central Park.

Not being picky, but the way that the first sentence is written makes it appear that the jogger was actually struck with her baby.

This is exactly why I support gentrification and school vouchers. Public schools and public housing churn out deliquents and vandals.

Maybe she should've thrown a can of beans at them.

I got mugged on Lincoln and 6th on Thursday at 5:30 am. Two men were mugged at 6th and Sterling on Monday at 3 in the afternoon.

Summer madness I guess. Be careful.

I thought two things with this incident, one, it reminded me of the "Wilding" case with Central Park Jogger, some of those kids now adults have been released from prison. Second, the growing crime rate in the city overrall. During Guiliani days, the massive police presence throughout the city was thought of as a Fascist regime however crime was down to record levels. That is not the case during Mr. Bloombergs tenure. There seems to be a growing populace of bad karma hitting the 5 boros lately and this incident is one of them.

The central park jogger case was infamous for catching the wrong guys. They were convicted on just their "confession".
Regarding cops, I've seen cops everywhere yesterday.
They were in all the subway stations I went to. And, I seen some cooling off in Columbus circle.
It just depends on the NYPD priorites, I guess Midtown Manhattan needs it more than other areas.

you are all so funny, how paranoid you are. if you don't like living in a city of 9 million people, some of whom are bad and others who are good, then leave and return to the DC suburbs you grew up in! as horrendous as this crime is, it pales in comparison to what happens to people all over the world, daily. we live in a great city with the habitual nasty side-effects. go blog about your babies somewhere and leave us out of it.

Maybe some of those Brooklyn cops that have recently been assigned to standing at the end of the Brooklyn Bridge and checking bicycle bells and reflectors might be more wisely assigned to patrol places like Prospect Park.

I saw the whole thing. Two black kids ran away and were yelling "stupid ass bitch" back at the mother. I was too far away to catch them even thought I tried.

There was definitely an increased police presence immediately after the series of muggings a short while ago -- officers were standing at entrances and along Park Drive (at least on the west side).

Not so much, now, though it does feel like nighttime patrols are more frequent than they have been in the past. A 1pm mugging within view of bystanders just seems... odd.

Just wait for 2009..The new mayor will be a democrat and we all know what it means wrt crime, corruption and taxes (see Dinkins years). Ferrer was famous of promising that the guliani cops will be out of the streets immediately. New York is the only decent and safe city in the country and it is because of Guliani.

Tear down those damn public housing projects.

who the fuck is guliani?

Ha Ha, try and tear down the projects.
We will be here Forever to ruin your views.
Funny how not once has a politico mentioned tearing down the projects.
never gonna happen, neva eva, stay the course.

Tear down the projects. Increase the size of the NYPD. Bring back Giuliani time...

If a bunch of 12 year olds tried that on anyone while I was within sight I would beat the shit out of them. If it was 1pm in the middle of a giant park I'd gather together a mob and hunt the little punks down.

It's time to remind everyone that NYC is the city where even the violent thugs should be afraid to mess with the wrong person.

HA HA in my nelson voice.
The Projects will be here forever.
You'll be a good little boy and do nothing.
Just like the people who let Kitty Genovese die.

This is hardly a horrendous crime. They stole her little ipod. Boohoo. I'd be somewhat embarrased at my own street smarts if I was mugged in daylight in front of a park full of people by a small troop of twelve-year-olds.

wow, you're right heather.
yes it was a crime but why is a mother jogging with her baby with an ipod?
guess it was a slow news day after the 3 days of Moore stories for the Post.
here's a tip for mom's, look after your children not your Ipod.

Let's hope the power stays on.

They should formed a mob with a few baseball bats and hunt them down! (thought not hurt them, but just give them a good scare that will make them shit their pants).

And mother with her baby will not even think of even hesitating in situation like this. The point is she was robbed in broad daylight and people around should have done somethinga about it. These are 12 year olds for crying out oud!

negros will be negros, nothing much more can be said than that.

Was she listening to the iPod when it happened? Is that good mothering skills listening to an iPod when you are suppose to be with your kid?

my mom got attacked by 4 10-12 year olds
luckily she got behind a locked door pretty quick
but the police didnt want to do anything about it

crazy thing is
we just saw cruising our neighborhood again
a few days ago
the one kid was stupid enough to say
"i recognise her!"

if i had known they were the kids
i would have smashed their heads on the side of my brick house
