To "Pupusa"...NO! they are called AREPAS in some other countries, for example in VENEZUELA, where they are originally from! I've heard of these "pupusas" and as I understand it they are pretty much the same thing as Venezuelan Arepas but from El Salvador.

They all cater to the families (primarily immigrants from across Latin America) who gather here to play and watch soccer matches on the surrounding ballfields. Like, kids' matches? Pick-up games among adults? Some kind of league play? Or what?

The spicy cabbage side you describe is called curtido. You can put it on top of the pupusa or you can open the pupusa up and put it inside. I've seen it done both ways! If they have any, try to get some orchata with the pupusa. It's a rice-based drink, and it does not dissapoint.
