The churning vats of chocolate, cocoa powders in a trifecta of shades, and towers of nougat can only be likened to the magical world of Willy Wonka. Max Brenner Chocolate by the Bald Man opened at 5 p.m. yesterday to ecstatic crowds of sugar-hungry passerby, with friendly servers doling out free samples of caramelized pecans coated in nougat and cocoa powder, and tables in the cafeteria-sized dining room quickly filling up.
The first American branch of Israeli pastry chef Max Brenner (with other locations in Israel, Singapore, Australia, and the Philippines), is part of Brenner's mission to create a new chocolate culture, not just a tasty product. Referring to his relationship with chocolate as a "love story," Brenner showcases an impressive repetoire of sweet treats, from meltiing marshmallow crepes and warm chocolate soup to danish with butter and melted chocolate cream and an endless stream of creme fraiche, fresh strawberries, nutty pralines.

Separate, but no less indulgent menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and sweets introduce chocolate to every part of the day while the drinks menu offers choctails like the "Cookishake" and the "Chocolate granita." Overwhelming, but fixating, Max Brenner puts magic back into the candy shop and can make any visitor feel as though it's perfectly normal -- in fact, the only option -- to eat chocolate at every meal.

Max Brenner is located at 841 Broadway (between 13th & 14th), (212) 388-0030. A second store is scheduled to open in about a month at 141 2nd Avenue (at 9th).

Thanks a lot. I was doing so well on my diet. Now I want CHOCOLATE!
i went the other day and i was pretty disappointed. the chocolate section is tiny and the staff is confused. in the end i spent $12 for 7 pieces of chocolate. a friend spent $14 for a confusingly labeled slab of chocolate. the chocolate was okay, but it made me wish a jacques torres was nearby.
Worth noting: they have not yet received their liquor license, and a handful of items off the menu are not quite available yet.
the cappuccino in the kangaroo cup with the little melting chocolates is sooooo good.
The Max Brenner Chocolate place was SO COOL! It's such a fun place to go with friends or for a date! Just reading the menu was fun because it's so creative and long! I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!! It's also visually pleasing because the lighting is perfect and it's quiet when you sit at your table even though there are lots of people at the restaurant. AND (!!) all the servers were super duper nice! I had the Smores dessert which was incredible! I give this place a 10!!!
This place is PHENOMENAL. The concept alone is brilliant, but the fact that the chocolate is actually GOOD (as opposed to say Hershey's), makes this place downright addictive. I cannot stress enough how delicious everything is. It's gonna take a lot of will power for me to limit my visits to the place (or maybe I'll just start jogging more).
Max Brenner is something else! We are witnessing a chocolate revolution and Max Brenner’s kinda like fonzie jumpin over the shark. Chocolate as we know it is now dead and gone with the creation of his 5,000 square foot Applebee’s in Union Square New York. Trendestters like Jacques Torress are alive and well not like the candy-created vision for which Wonka-like “Max Brenner" has been created. Well iIt was fun while it lasted. Me, I’d rather feast at the originals, Payard, Maison du Chocolate, Chocolate Bar and Li Lac. Give me back the old days please....
