Afternoon Frights: Hit and Run and Park Mugging

2006_07_hitrun.jpgA man was killed by a car while he crossed Third Avenue around 4PM. The Daily News reports that 54 year old Eugenio Garcia of Queens had been visiting a friend in Kips Bay. The black car that hit him did not stop, but some onlookers tried to follow it. Two doctors started CPR on him, but were unable to revive him. Onlookers also say that Garcia was not in the crosswalk.

And a 60-something year old man was attacked and mugged at knifepoint in Central Park around 3PM. The Post calls it "an encounter" and reminds everyone that the Ramble, where the incident occured, is a "gay trysting locale." Apparently the attacker wanted a cigarette, but the older man refused.

"a gay trysting locale"?
Gotta love the post: Even if it is, what does that have to do with someone acting like an Asshole and robing another man?

"A cigarette"? Is that what we're calling it now?

Another reason to "quit smoking".

I've heard that muggers will often ask for a cigarette in order to get the victims hands busy digging into pockets, making it easier to attack. Probably the guy was not really wanting a cigarette, but rather was intent on mugging the guy from the get-go.

But in broad daylight! That sure takes me back to the bad old days of Central Park.

Where is the "Ramble"?
Good thing I only smoke cigars, getting burned with that would leave a mark. They also keep the bugs away.
I don't know about the bad old days but I do remember the start of the roller disco craze when everyone wanted to roller skate in CP.
Remember the Pepsi Challenge? It was a 24 bike ride around CP and was held before the 5 boro bike tour.

1) the line is from the linked story.
2) it makes it slightly different than a random hit up in the park.

Is the Ramble even a "gay trysting locale" anymore? I haven't heard of that happening there in years. Not since the big clean up of the park.

It's never really changed MT. Similar "locales" can be found in Riverside Park and Prospect Park.

Dhex, I meant the NY Post, not this post on Gothamist. I'll be more careful to put the NY in front of it, Next time.
;)

Sure, It "Sexes Up" the story. I expect nothing less from the Rag known as the NY Post.
