Isn't the AMNH "suggested donation" for straight up admission? Couldn't you just pay for a ticket to the exhibit (which is mandatory) and then give a buck (or nothing) to get into the rest of the museum?
FYI The Brooklyn Children's Museum has basilisk lizards and a 25 foot albino Burmese python in their permanent exhibit. Sometimes you can even watch her being fed.

David Letterman had some of these "squamates" on his show last night. I used to be very scared of them but they looked really quite interesting.
