Last Night’s Action: Got Melk?

2006_04_syankeeslogo.jpg-Yankees 6 Rangers 2: This time last year, Melky Cabrera was back in Columbus after failing a six-game audition in centerfield. Now, he has become an integral part of the team and one of the main reasons that New York is still in the pennant race. Monday, Cabrera went 3 for 4, hitting a single, double and triple, stealing a base and throwing a runner out at second.

Cabrera’s league-leading eighth assist put an end to a Texas rally and helped Randy Johnson improve to 11-8. The suddenly formidable combination of Proctor-Farnsworth-Rivera finished off the game for New York.

-Cubs 8 Mets 7: Steve Trachsel pitched poorly at the start and end of his night and that made the difference. After giving up three runs in the first, Trachsel settled down and with the help of his offense, took a 4-3 lead into the fifth. That’s when things fell apart as he gave up back-to-back home runs and Heath Bell couldn’t stop the bleeding as Chicago exploded for a five-run inning. New York loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh and scored three runs, but they couldn’t tie the game.

Actually Mekly has 9 assists, tying him with Crawford for the AL lead in outfield assists. Soriano, in the NL leads all outfielders with 13.

Cashman should trade A-Rod and Melky for Abreu and David Bell and a minor leaugue pitcher, that should solve the problem.

As of now they can't catch Boston, and the Twins will likely win the wildcard.

I like Proctor to Farnsworth to Mo; teams really have little chance after 6 if all 3 have sufficient rest. That's why Dotel coupled with Myers/Villone could be key, so as not to burn those 3 out.

If Unit has turned it on, and Moose and Wang continue to excel the Yanks have enough pitching to beat Boston- provided Arod can hit like they thought he would.

Amazing how it does all boil down to him. Makes me wonder if batting Giambi in the cleanup makes more sense since he gives power and OBP but a lower average. I'd go:

    Damon

    Cabrera

    Jeter

    Giambi

    Arod

    Posada

    Williams

    Phillips

    Cairo/ Cano?

Finally, if they can buy Abreu for low-ceiling minor leaguers they will, plug him in RF and behind Arod and watch this lineup ROAR.

  • There's no way in the world that A-Rod is going to go anywhere. Sure it's rough playing in NY; when you make five errors in five games you're gonna get booed. But the tradeoff is there is nothing better than winning in NY because of the occational lows.

    A-Rod still wins ballgames.

  • haha, i love the reference to the chicago accent

Cabrera's not leading the league in assists - out of all LFs in the league, Alfonso Soriano and Carl Crawford have more assists, and Jason Bay is tied with Cabrera...
