Thanks for this review. I've often walked by this place wondering if its worthwhile for a lunch/dinner since it became Bar Toto. I'll probably give these a try.

Ditto to Rocknrope. The last time I went there it was totally different restaurant years ago and I've always wondered if I should go back- it's a beautiful space inside.

living an avenue over in park slope, bar toto is dangerously easy to get to for me. being vegetarian I can't really comment on the burger, but the food is at worst good to eat on an average night - of course i like their salads - but the fries are defnitely killer. the real treat about bar toto for myself (and my girlfriend) is the bar: a great grappa selection (esp if you know what to ask for) and a stunning line of aperitifs.

panino americano? two words: patty melt.

Bar toto is horrible. The food is sub par at best. Their paninis are slathered with butter and the ingredients in them are spare and the cheese comes out congealed and nauseating.

If you can forgive the so-so food there is no excuse for the shitty service which is NEVER with a smile and rarely competent. After messing up two brunch orders the other day, the best the server could do was knock off the price of 1 coffee ($2). I’ll never eat there again and you should avoid it unless there is a famine and it’s the only place left serving food.

They stole the Patty Melt!!! And gave it some yuppie name! They have been serving this in the VIP diner in Jersey City for years. Damn New Yorkers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patty_melt

A patty melt is a type of hamburger sandwich consisting of a hamburger patty and cheese between two slices of bread (usually rye or sourdough). The sandwich is then grilled so that the cheese melts thoroughly. It commonly includes pieces of sautéed onion, and at some places may include salad dressing.

Bad service? I've always had great service at Bar Toto, and the atmosphere has been convivial and neighborly. Their brunch is great - reasonably priced and served with fresh flatbread instead of stale toast or pre-bought english muffins. And I second the fries comment - they are excellent.

I agree with slope resident, HORRID service is the norm at Bar Toto. More often than not orders arrive incorrectly and the wait staff is rude and indifferent. It's a shame because the paninis are excellent.

Geez, now all the mixed comments have me rethinking my visit tonight. I may have to see for myself and check back in....

To continue on the bad service topic, the one time I went to Bar Toto, the pizza we ordered came with a burnt bottom (not just charred, it actually tasted like charcoal). First the waitress tried to claim that's how it's supposed to be and only after we complained again did she take it off our check.

Panini was pretty good though.

Well, Mr Restaurant Inspection says as of late March:

1.) Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to vermin exist.
2.) Food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service.
3.) Evidence of roaches or live roaches present in facility's food and/or non-food areas.

I think I'll pass, even though that panini/patty melt looks tasty. I know it's not LA but Gothamist really should include the health inspection info, if not to help shame people into cleaning up their kitchens!

we live around the corner, have been there twice. first time: wonderful food (veggie burger panino with gorgonzola for me), okay service. second time: okay food (eggplant parm. for me, nothing special), good wine, horrible service. contemplating a third visit for brunch, but mr. yuk's info is a little scary...
