We've been getting a bunch of emails and tips about terrible Internets connectivity from Time Warner through out the day and wondered if anyone knew what was going on. (We use Verizon, so we're screwed in a different way.) If you look at the Network Status chart, the problems are all around town, but with enough in Queens to make us wonder if the outage is related to Con Ed digging up wires and hitting the series of tubes that make up the Internet. At any rate, we hope Road Runner pro-rates everyone's bills for these few days of outages!

I'm in hell's kitchen (north 9th/10thave) and time warner is working fine... in fact, it's speedier than normal.
And here I spent all morning cursing my hardware and not my provider (I'm way up the UWS). It's all good though - around mid-afternoon full-speed resumed and I was off in a thematically appropriate puff of smoke.

They will only do this from the time you open a ticket with them, until the time the issue is resolved; if you call after the fact, even though they are aware your internet was crapo, you are basically screwed.
My connection's been awful all day and I've got Time Warner. I'm down by Chambers St.
no connectivity at all on W. 13th street - time warner was confused when i finally got a hold of them (after 45 mins of wait time). 2nd day in a row of no internet connection, though modem lights are all a-glow.
In LIC/Queens, TWC was dialup-slow all weekend; ditto for Battery Park City. Seems to be ok today.
lol they won't be pro-rating anyone unless you've had an extended outage. And even then its like pulling hairs. Road Runner Customer Service sucks
They're having problems all over the eastern seaboard and at least Texas too. Check other cities on that status page. Link level connectivity is fine (lights on your cable modem), but no packets flow. I'm in Chelsea and this has been going on since last night. Anyone have the inside scoop?
DSL Reports is a great resource, they have forums where users (and sometimes ops of the ISP's) talk about the issues going on:

Also, I believe this will hurt Time Warner (Road Runner) and its partners like Earthlink & NewYorkConnect as internet service providers.
RR is working fine in Ft. Greene, but I've had plenty of problems in the past, and they have never pro-rated squat.
Out in brooklyn I had problems all night on Sunday. I traced my ping of google and the problem was a level3 server in Weehaken. Effing Jersey screws me again.=)
Naveed's right -- it affected Earthlink service too. My internet's been down since yesterday evening, but it magically came back sometime today (not as of this morn, though). I called TW and they kept telling me everything looked fine on their end, and oddly everything looked fine on my end too -- all the right lights were blinking. But alas, no connection. It seems I'm lucky enough to live in the only damn section of Brooklyn where they were reporting an outage!
I came home on Sat. Night and internet was out. After waiting on hold for over 15 i gave up and went to bed. I also tried to crash onto my neighbors signal and that was out too. Sunday it was back on.....kinda can't complain with whats going on in Queens..
Exact same problem as jp. On Earthlink cable, but will be feeling Gothamist's plight. I ordered Verizon DSL a week ago, installed today, but the modem was DOA. Luckily, I've still got service.
my earthlink shit has been wobbly for the last month. It's always up and down. And I live in tribeca. I'm so jealous of my cousin who downloads at 340 kbps all the time while I pay 40 bucks a month for wonky shit that's a little faster than dialup sometimes and always turns off at the most inopportune times like when I'm masturbating to streaming Japanese animated pornography.
YES!!!! RoadRunner has been spotty for a minimum of 1 to 2 weeks. I'm on Houston between A and B. At its worst the digital cable was pixelating like crazy. TIME WARNER KNOWS IT'S A PROBLEM. I have a picture of Time Warner running cable (fiber?) in the manhole as proof. I have the pic of the monster cable truck of death with orange cable. They did it at night so maybe it's a coverup.
I read earlier today (I forget where or I'd link) that the work Con Ed is doing in Brooklyn caused some damage to TimeWarner lines and is thus affecting connectivity... so yes, the blackout in Queens is to blame, inadvertently.
In Queens, I mean, not Brooklyn.
My Internet (TW) has been spotty since last Thursday night - it will come back for 30 minutes or so and then be out for hours. The modem keeps re-setting itself every minute or so, but goes back to blinking. A tech is coming to check it out on Wed.
Kristin - I had about five days of those same symptoms last month, as did others in my building. Time Warner initially had no idea what was going on, then they said they'd send someone over, then they changed their minds and said someone was working on "a problem" in the area and it'd be fixed in a few hours. Repeat daily. Very frustrating... it'd have been better to be completely out instead of having the intermittent connectivity. When it was finally fixed, they gave me a prorated discount since I'd complained so much. Allegedly, it is automatic on outages of 4 hours or more.
