Is That a Tomahawk Missile on Your Flatbed or Are You Just Happy to See Me?

2006_07_missle.jpg

We don't know where to begin, so let's just put it out there: WCBS 880 reports that, yes, a flatbed truck carrying a Tomahawk missile did break down and get rear-ended by another vehicle - causing the missile to fall on I-95 near the Bronx. The NYPD confirmed that there was an "inert ordinance," and the FDNY confirmed it was a Tomahawk missile. WCBS 880 adds this: "It is important to emphasize that the missile was not armed." But that takes the fun out of the hysteria!

The missile was on its way to Virginia. We guess missiles need to be transported somehow, so now we know not to always think those huge flatbed trucks are carrying construction materials.

This is standard procedure for transporting missiles (including nuclear ones) from location to location. It's either trucks or trains. When the interstate system was originally built starting in the Fifties, it was designed so that trucks carrying missiles could clear all the underpasses. I believe that the drivers are also armed to the teeth in case someone tries to hijack their cargo.

Well, they have to get from place to place somehow (besides the self-propelled way).

PS: Nice headline, Jen.

"inert ordinance" should be spelled "inert ordnance". Ordnance is Military materiel, such as weapons, ammunition, combat vehicles, and equipment, according to Dictionary.com

I'm sure if anyone hijacked the cargo, Jack Bauer would be able to get it back within a day or so. "Who are you working for?"

A day or so? Are you kidding? Jack only needs a few hours! Takes the guy a few minutes to get from LA to Brazil.
:-P
