What's Fresh - Blueberries

2006_07_blueberries.jpgThe last few weeks, there has been an abundance of Blueberries in the market. Firm and bursting with sweet, acidic flavor, they have great uses all throughout the day.The most important aspect to buying is trying. Make sure that you sneak a berry out of the container you intend to purchase; this will hopefully ensure that you will not end up with flat tasting little blue fruits.

As far as application, try them some of the ways below.

For breakfast:
- Folded into pancake batter or dropped on top of the cakes just after they hit the griddle.
- In a bowl with some sweetened whipped cream and granola. Make sure to chill the bowl in the freezer for a good whip and look for pasteurized cream as opposed to ultra-pasteurized if possible.

At lunch:
- Added to your favorite salad, lean toward neutral lettuces (no arugula) and sweet vegetables like Vidalia onions and sweet corn.
- Mashed into a paste and spread on a turkey sandwich in lieu of cranberry sauce.

At dinner:
- Try a sauce for duck or other game. Use some vinegar, tarragon and some stock to round it out.
- Allow them to shine gloriously in a pie, cobbler or tart. Make fresh tart dough, it is easy, cold butter and ice water are the key.

What are your favorite uses ?

i LOVE blueberry season!

my fav is to make a blueberry buckle...kind of like a coffee cake. it's something i can grab for a quick breakfast in the morning or top with vanilla ice cream for dessert in the evening.

i also like to eat them just all on their own.

I crush them a little bit to make them juicy, then I add them to Greek style yogurt. Yuummm.

i found a recipe in a cookbook by classic NYC foodwriter Roy Andries de Groot for blueberry pasta
i made it (with a few of my own tweaks) and it was DELICIOUS
weird, but very, very yummy!
a total dinner part hit if ever there was one

All year long, I look forward to blueberry season in July/August.

I enjoy blueberries with whipped cream and angel food cake.

Blueberries make the ultimate at-work-snack. Also, when watching calories, blueberries tossed into some cottage cheese is a surprisingly satisfying lunch.

Freeze two bananas and the blueberries.

Mix the bananas, a handful of the frozen blueberries, a dash of vanilla, and a little bit of of vanilla soymilk in a food processor for a heathful, ice cream-like frosty treat.

My favorite uses are pretty much the ones you've mentioned, especially pancakes and salads, but I'm thinking of trying the recipe for blueberry risotto in The Silver Spoon cookbook -- the comment above about blueberry pasta is very encouraging!

blueberries make my shit blue! seriously, the best season is blackberry season. Those blackberries are awesome. Too bad they are only available for a week.

Too bad blackberries in the Northeast taste like rotten ass.
