FILM: Dutch animator Paul Driessen (who you know even if you don't realize it - he did the Beatles' Yellow Submarine movie), will have films from the last 30 years screened at BAM - as part of their Animation Festival. Step into his socially conscious fantasy world!

THEATER: Off-Broadway is usually way off, far from the the theater district, but the Midtown International Theater Festival, which opens today, puts 45+ plays and readings on four stages clustered on West 36th. Plays range from Lorna Littleway's Motion and Location, a coming-of-age story about a gay African American girl basketball player, to Jonathan Wallace's The Turtle Tattoo, about a burned-out EMT who meets a lovely but burdened marine biologist while volunteering at a beach, to John Carter's Where Three Roads Meet, about Freud and Jung's difficult relationship. MUSIC: Brooklyn Borough president Marty Markowitz began the Martin Luther King, Jr. concert series 24 years ago. The outdoor entertainment has been around since, and tonight's show features performances by Stephanie Mills, The Whispers and Melba Moore. Full details here (LL Cool J on August 7th!)

ART: Lost in Transition will be on exhibit at the Municipal Art Society starting today. The show focuses on how more than other part of the city, "Brooklyn continues to witness huge changes to its social, economic and cultural character." With a focus on Williamsburg and Carroll Gardens and recent changes to those neighborhoods as well as their ongoing evolution. Images and text by students from the Williamsburg Preparatory High School and the Brooklyn School for Global Studies, as well as resident photographer Jackie Neale Chadwick.

  • Alright. But he was just one of many serving the artistic style of the film rather than his own. Still, if he needs to claim Yellow Submarine to push himself, even after 30 years worth of films and a retrospective, what the fuck. Anyway, maybe he did one of the major characters or something, which would be a big deal. In that case, he's being overly modest -- I wanna know which one!
