It Takes A Lot Of Men To Make A Gun

Well, you certainly do learn something new every day. For instance thanks to today's Daily News we learned the NYPD keeps a special collection in their ballistic lab in which they keep "some of the most notorious weapons ever fired within city limits." We're talking everything from the gun used to shoot John Lennon to a "World War II German submachine gun found at a Brooklyn construction site."

Of course they also keep "common" guns in the collection to, as the whole point of it is as a reference library for use in helping identify weapons that are seized on city streets (anywhere from 40 to 50 guns come in on an average day). Though the library has some interesting, if unpleasant, history it is unlikely to be opened to the public anytime soon. If it were then it would be harder for analysts to access them for their work.

And now you know.

The NYPD Museum on Old Slip St. has an insane collection of weapons--firearms and otherwise--collected over the years. Definitely worth visiting.

It makes my day to wake up and read an Assassins quote after a long weekend. Thanks, Gothamist.
