The Daily News has the exclusive: The MTA cannot implement more robot trains, aka the OPTO One Person Traion Operation! It's not technology that's stopping them - it's the fact that the transit workers union would need to approve additional OPTO trains along different lines. And that seems unlikely, since the union wanted at least two workers to be on the trains in case of an emergency. (Which makes sense!) The MTA had been trying to put more robot train service on the L and G, but the union managed to limit that to weekends and late evenings. It also looks like plans for "conductorless trains" on the J, 7, and N won't happen. There is OPTO service on "small shuttles or line segments," but NYC Transit Authority President Larry Reuter says, "The future expansion of OPTO takes negotiations with the union and at this point those negotiations are on hold." Now, it's just a matter having enough trains along those lines.
Last year, when OPTO service began on the L, the MTA explained, "One-Person Trains are already operating successfully on the G, Dyre Avenue 5 Shuttle, the Rockaway Park Shuttle, and in Chicago, Philadelphia, Paris and London."

Let the TWU bashing begin...
Said bashing is totally justified. They oppose better service because it would mean fewer overpaid jobs for them.
The more automation, the better.
Yeah, Cause in case of an Emergency, One Guy will safely lead people out with the "Automation" keeping track of any Strays.
"pedestrian", you think one Guy alone can safely evacuate possibly several hundred people?
"The more automation, the better."? Oh Please...
Ever hear of Minimum Safety requirements??
And if we had 4 workers per train, we would have even more safe and efficient evacuations...
*eye roll*
Michael, that's what I like to see: Overeaction.
The TWU isn't asking for 4 people, only 2.
OPTO = "One Person Train Operation"
It has nothing to do with the trains being driven by computers or so-called "robo trains". That system is called CBTC = "Computer Based Train Control". Why can't the media get this straight?
The L will be driven by computers, 1 operator or 20.
Ever hear of the many automated subway lines already in existence?

What capabilities do train operators and conductors have in case of an emergency? If OPTO works in many other major transit systems it can obviously be implemented here. This is all about protecting unnecessary union jobs and for the TWU to play the "terror" card is pathetic.
Hey Pedestrian -
Overpaid my ass. You're totally being fooled by those who want you to think they are being overpaid.
"Ever hear of the many automated subway lines already in existence?"
Sure, but how many of them are in old Subways requiring major maintenance? How many expect help to be there in case of Emergency?
Case in point: The Blackout in August 2003. If that his an Automated line, people would be screwed. The Blackout didn't affect the DC power to the trains, but it did hit all the signals. Each train had to be slowly moved into a station. An Automated system can't do that if it's support and control Structure is knocked out.
BTW: The Gov't and power companies has done precious little to prevent another blackout from happening again...
It's a shame that unions are holding so many business (and entire industries) hostage.
They have basically ruined the American automotive industry, and other industries are headed overseas in lockstep.
I have to agree that even 4 MTA employees on a train aren't going to do shit in the face of a crisis.
And yes, these people are grossly overpaid, especially when you factor in benefits. Who else in this day and age gets a pension?
S.D.: Automated trains have manual controls for emergency situations.
LET THE MTA PAY FOR 1 CONDUCTOR AND SUBSIDIZE THE SALARY OF 1 NYPD OFFICER PER TRAIN. A CROSS-TRAINED COP COULD OPEN TRAIN-CAR DOORS AND DO A BETTER JOB OF KEEPING TRANSIT SAFE! [IF SAFETY IS THEIR REAL DEFENSE]
WOULD LET THE MTA IMPLEMENT MODERN TECHNOLOGIES ON THE COUNTRIES LARGEST P.T. SYSTEM AS WELL.
"What capabilities do train operators and conductors have in case of an emergency?"
Hmmm, Let me think, Leading people to safety? One in the Front, One in the back to get stragglers??
"Terror" Card? Jim, You think we *won't* get hit again? Look if people want to hate the Unions (Me, I can't stand the 40 hour Work week!), Ok, but To pretend "Automation" will lead people to safety, um, No...
IMO, people Hate the Union since it interferes with their own self-interest, but will scream when they aren't there to help save them...
me: Whatever. I have intelligent and well-educated friends who make less, and their jobs involve more than opening and closing doors, making a train stop and go, or driving a bus. Oh yeah, and they're not getting pensions.
to pedestrian: Then maybe your "intelligent,well-educated" friends should get better jobs that give them the benefits they deserve.
"me: Whatever. I have intelligent and well-educated friends who make less, and their jobs involve more than opening and closing doors, making a train stop and go, or driving a bus. Oh yeah, and they're not getting pensions."??
Oooooh, there's So much I could do with that, but I'll really try to be good.
pedestrian, I'm sorry to say: it sounds like your friends are getting screwed. So since they're getting Screwed, everyone should? If that's the only basis for not liking Unions, IMO, it's wrong.
I'm NOT in a Union, but given the choice of trusting a Union or a Company/Municipality-Management I think Unions are the lesser Evil of the two .
Charles, exactly. Just because most people are underpaid doesn't mean that the train workers are overpaid. The working class has been getting the shaft since Reagan. The rich are getting obscenely rich for a reason.

Pedestrian, methinks your "well educated" friends need a union.
