An off duty police officer stopped a man from carjacking him by shooting him in the face. Officer Kenneth O'Connor had been sitting in his Ford Explorer SUV when Daniel Arroyo apparently threatened him with a gun early Sunday. O'Connor used his off-duty - and licensed - revolver and shot him in the head, but didn't realize that Arroyo had been wounded until he saw blood on the ground. The cop called the police and Arroyo was found trying to run away.
Arroyo is recovering at Jacobi hospital. His aunt told the NY Times Arroyo could not have attempted the carjacking, adding, "His cellphone was all full of blood because he was trying to call." The Times does note that Arroyo's gun was found near O'Connor's car, "cocked and loaded"; he was charged with attempted robbery and assault, plus weapons possession.
And the Times' Ethicist Randy Cohen tackled the subject of whether or not a man who ran away from carjackers - but left his girlfriend there - was ethical.

His aunt is an example of how relatives really shouldn't talk to the press. Of course she thinks her nephew didn't try it, She's his aunt. My Aunts could never imagine one of her darling nephews doing anything bad...
"whether or not a man who ran away from carjackers - but left his girlfriend there - was ethical."
Hope he means Ex-girlfriend! You don't leave someone behind, you make sure they are with you.
LOL. the bronx
Good. He shoulda shot him in the face. This is one for the good guys.
citizens should be armed for this very reason. crime would drop 80%.
exactly, somehow I would find a regular citizen in a much worse predicament if he/she did the same thing.
like getting grilled by the cops as to why one used a gun to protect oneself.
don't forget, this carjacker had a Gun to the victim. you fight power with power.
and, I'm a good guy with a squeaky clean criminal record, not even a traffic ticket. yes, I went through some thorough background checks.
(sigh)
A Citizen was Armed. I.e. the Carjacker and Lo! Crime has risen...
the line should be "Cop Shots Carjacker in the Face" your tenses are all wrong..
our taxes paid to finance both the shooting and the victim's recovery. you can't script comedy like this.
Ha ha ha, Seamus!
The story says that the cop shot the carjacker with a revolver and yet you have a picture of a .45 Colt 1911 pistol. Even though the carjacker was found with a loaded and cocked semi-auto .380, I am dismayed at the lack of your accuracy with your graphics Jen!
PS This is a parody post pointed to the people critiing your lack of kitchenware accuracy on that pan/pot-bashing post. I don't see anyone else criticizing the accuracy of your gun graphic even though it's wholly inaccurate, albeit representative and illustrative, which is what your graphics are supposed to be.
The term loaded and cocked really should be used only with single action type pistols.
Everything else you just pull the trigger and it goes bang.
But since many native new yorkers never held a handgun in their life, it's understandable they get all their misconceptions from the media.
Cocked and Locked is really the only way to carry a 1911. and, it's plenty safe to do so. Modern guns don't really just discharge "accidentally", the trigger was pulled is how it went "off".
A revolver has not been on the NYPD's list of approved off duty gun in more than a decade. Sure you have some old timers keeping them to show they're one of the veterans.
