Last Night's Action: Pelfry Wins in Explosive Debut

2006_04_smetslogo.jpg - Marlins 3, Mets 2: John Maine was the tough-luck loser yesterday in the first game of yesterday's doubleheader against the Marlins. Maine allowed only 6 hits over 6 innings, but three of those hits were home runs. The Mets didn't offer up much run support in the loss, getting only 3 hits.

- Mets 17, Marlins 3: All the offense the Mets were lacking in game 1 against the Marlins came out in game 2 as Mike Pelfry made his Major League debut. Pelfry pitched a shaky 5 innings, allowing three runs and had a wild pitch. The Mets generated all the offense they would need in the first inning when they scored 5 runs, including a grand slam by Jose Valentin. Valentin added to his RBI total with a bases clearing triple in the 2nd inning. Pelfry was the first starter to win his Mets debut in eight years.

- Yankees 5, Devil Rays 1: For the Yankees, there's nothing like a trip to Tampa Bay. Chien-Ming Wang pitched 8 1/3 innings to lead the Yankees to their 4th straight win. Wang out-dueled Devil Rays ace Scott Kazmir, who only allowed 2 earned runs in his outing.

- SI Yankees 7, Lake Monsters 1: Gotta love those minor league baseball team names. The Vermont Lake Monsters were formerly the Vermont Expos, named after their Major League affiliate, changed their name this year.

- Spikes 4, Cyclones 1: The Cyclones loss didn't mean the night was a total loss as there was a wedding after the game! Dave Kerpen and Carrie Fisher were married at home plate in front of friends, fans, and players.

- FC Dallas 2, Red Bulls 1: The Red Bulls get another loss. Good thing Red Bull is getting all that great marketing from owning the team.
