We heard that a person had been injured in some sort of attack at the 110th and Broadway subway station around 3:30AM, but little did we know it involved power saws. amNew York reports that a man grabbed "two electric saws from constructions workers...and took off swinging". Yes, electric saws! Then he chased passengers down the platform. One man ended up stabbed in the chest, and he yelled, "He's drilling into me! He's drilling me!" according to witnesses. WABC 7 says that victim was "rushed to St. Luke's Hospital in critical condition with numerous wounds to the chest."
The attacker then ran into Riverside Park. The police are looking for him and apparently found some evidence in the trash. The Transit Authority says workers were using saws to repair the subway's sound system.
Update: Newsday and amNY now report:
The suspect sliced open the chest of a 64-year-old rider before fleeing on foot, police said. The victim, a 64 year old man, is a postal worker and was on his way to work. The suspect was described by witnesses as a thin man in his 30s, who had earrings in both ears and was possibly carrying a teddy bear. A man fitting that description was apprehended after allegedly punching a pedestrian later in the day.

i cant wait for mayor mike to outlaw electric chainsaws. god knows they're as dangerous as guns and even easier to buy. maybe not easier to buy in parts of washington heights but in chelsea for sure.
what is this world commin to seriousally
I see Patrick Bateman is at it again...
man, that must be one long extension cord
Hope they catch the guy!
110th station at 3am--are these people suicidal?
You know, Ace, so many of your attempts at humor just fall flat when you don't read the articles before trying to crack wise. What part of "cordless" don't you understand?
Appears they were Dewalt brand cordless reciprocating saws.
Dewalt is some good quality. Thanks to the 18v Lithium battery, those saws are light enough for use with one hand, leaving the other hand free so you can carve into two dudes at once.
Suicidal? 110th and Broadway is the south end of Morningside Heights. Its a university neighborhood (Columbia), and is generally very safe.
Brightliner, maybe he didn't click through the link to see the word "cordless" and only read the above post, which doesn't mention "cordless." Try not being such a miserable human being for one day of your life and you may find you can lay off the antidepressants.
Ugh! That's my stop!
110th street is having some bad luck. First the 110th C stop, and now the 1 stop.
Ugh.
what Todd said. i have used that station at all hours for years w/o incident. sh*t like this can happen anywhere - someone who needs meds and care doesn't get it, finds a broken chainsaw and finds someone to use it on.
i came, i saw, i escaped on foot
BAN ALL TEDDY BEARS
Certain readers are ignoring certain things. This sort of incident does not happen south of 86th (and don't say, oh, you mean 96th).
[16] Short memories Larry? The guy from Boston (the last high profile subway attack) who started attacking people at the 110th street C stop finished his run down in Times Square. And I believe the infamous tourist attack about 10 years ago was relatively midtown as well.
I'm glad to see that cordless reciprocating saws are just lying around the subway station at 3:30am! Makes me feel safer all the time.
Larry is absolutely correct. There has never been any subway crime south of 86th street in manhattan. end of discussion.
i use that 110th street station every week at all hours and have never felt threatened. even at 3am on a thursday the middle subway cars will likely have 10-20 people on them. there's a 24 hour station attendant on both sides, and the surrounding neighborhood is mostly professors and students, with plenty of police presence. until they tore down columbia bagels, there was guaranteed to be a cop car idling on the northeast corner of 110 and broadway at any given time after 10pm. Hardly a hotbed of violent crime.
However, there is a halfway house somewhere down past amsterdam near 110, I believe. I wonder if the suspect they have in custody was connected to that place.
This never used to happen when "Morningside Heights" was called Harlem.
"Ghandi,"
Are you trying to be intentionally ironic with your nic and obtuse to boot? What do you think I was saying? Ace couldn't be bothered to click through and actually read the article. He just wanted to be one of the first with a wisecrack. And he failed because he didn't know the first thing about what he was talking about. A real "Ghandi" wouldn't be so quick to go around screaming "misery" and "antidepressants." If I'm miserable, then you're in the same boat.
BTW, sorry about the double post. Typical Movable Type malfunction lost the first post for a few minutes.
Wow, Some nut grabs a couple of saws and has himself a good time at the expense of this poor guy. Does surprise me at all, Why weren't these tools sucured? Well the next step would be for this guy to sue the contractors, as well as the MTA. The saga continues................
" OH THE GOOD OLD DAYS " When ER's just had to worry about gun shot wounds ! If we outlaw power tools only contractors will be outlaws "HUM" ???
