Downtown - No Finer Place In About Four Years

2006_07_video.jpg

The Post reports that the Lover Manhattan website is all zinged up for "morale-boosting" and "updates" on Ground Zero-area construction. Those "This is 2010. It's Happening Now" posters are all part of the a campaign "aimed at giving residents and workers in lower Manhattan real-time information about the $20 billion in construction projects that will be ramping up this summer." So for four years, you can get served up the government's spin on what's happening. What we're impressed by is how the state and city government is commited to 2010 as a hard date. Given all back-and-forth, 2015 seems more likely.

At lowermanhattan.info, there's a 5 minute, 46 second video ("This is 2010. It's happening now."), a visualization tour, a rebuilding timeline, and an overview of many downtown projects.

Here's the real and real slow information on just two of the $20 billion in construction projects down there. A tiny park across from India House in front of 3 Hanover has been under construction for more than a year, and the short distance between William and Pearl on Wall Street has been under construction for more than one year. 2010? I don't like the sound of this "4 more years" either.

  • I love the wishful thinking.

But we all know that this is becoming such a boondogle that it will be the new Westway.

  • yes, i'd pass up the job. then again, i'm an artist so it's moot.

and yes, i know that there are tons and tons of places that are targets... let's take subways, for example. if there were *one* subway car that where there was an omnipresent target. one that was a replacement of one that was blown up. sorry, i won't ride it.

and i think that i have a right to be fearful if only for the reason that the people who are supposed to be protecting us from evil are incompetent.

"i don't know that there is any amount of $$ that could get me to work in the new freedom tower; it'll be like a giant bullseye on the city."

Shhhhh! If you say that, then the terrorists win!

Everyone has their price. Would you pass up a job that would know you would love that pays extremely well if it were based at the freedom tower? I know I wouldn’t.

How about the subways? They can be targeted at any time and in essence is itself a large target. Would you stop taking the subways if there was a risk of attack? How about visiting London? They had some terrible bombings last year. Would that factor into your decision to visit?

Never base you're decisions mostly on fear; for it will always hold you back.

Don't base you're decisions on fear

Take it how you want to. You are the opposite of courageous though, straight and simple.

Al Qaeda may or may not try to attack this building or the thousands of others in new york and all over the country.

I suggest you immediately move out to the wilderness where you will (most likely) be safe from the terrorists.

  • please do not insult me.

this has nothing to do with courage; it has to do with the fact that i don't trust our government to keep me safe from terrorists.

it's one thing to carry on with our daily lives, ride the rubway, fly on planes, etc., it's quite another to place myself somewhere that's likely to be a target. i have no doubt that al qaida will view this building like eyes on a prize.

^ Thankfully there are NYers with more courage than you.
