Boom Fight, or the First Vlog-o-War

2006_6_rocketboom1.jpg

The vlogosphere has its first shake-up: Rocketboom's Amanda Congden was, in her words, unboomed (she has a video, natch). Wanting to set the record straight after Rocketboom showed a week of non-Amanda clips, she says that her Rocketboom partner - and owner of a 51% share in Rocketboom - Andrew Baron fired her and she actually starts to get teary in the video. ValleyWag says she seems much realer in this clip or "it's a hoax and Congdon's finally learned how to act."

Many people are buzzing about this shocking development in the world of vlogging. Do you think this was a hoax? It seems real. And will this live up to other blog fights, like Michael Malice vs. Morgan, Jesse Oxfeld vs. Nick Denton, or Jason Calacanis vs., well, everyone? Update: Andy Carvin says Amanda is moving to LA - the plot thickens?

Update: Oh snap-- Andrew Baron said that Amanda's departure is news to him!

Update: From Rocketboom:

Amanda Congdon has decided to move to L.A. to pursue opportunities that have arisen for her in Hollywood.

We wanted to meet her request to move production out to L.A., however, we are a small company and have not been able to figure out a way to make it work, financially and in many other ways at this time. So sadly we bid Amanda adieu and wish her all the best.

Hmm, we're smelling something along the lines of Up Close and Personal meets Anchorman, with a splash of Network.

actually andrew's in toronto for a while :-P this is a hoax

stay tuned to torontoist, maybe he'll pop up here!

who are these people? am i getting too old?

What is this post even about?

Amanda says she was fired. Drew says it's the first he's heard of it. Methinks it's a parody of Denton's management style.

Wow! A shake-up in the "vlogosphere"..... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I thought Amanda's partner was her husband?

"Vlogging? Jesus.... What is this post even about?! ... A shake-up in the "vlogosphere"..... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz."

- People who used to say the same things about blogs.

I dunno...it hardly seems like Rocketboom would be able to survive without Amanda. This seems like stealth marketing (work that sympathy/loyalty angle!) to promote whatever bigger project she's getting ready to unveil.

I have no idea what is going on in this post, all I know is that I am uncomfortable with the liberal use of the word 'boom.'

Who are these people?
Is this what the Internet really is for? The Look at me, I have a blog aspect.
Then she mentions she's going to the beach???
Don't people work anymore? rhetorical question

Like other posters, I have no understanding of what any of this means.

However, curiosity getting the best of me, I watched the clip: perhaps the map being upside-down points to an April Fools-type prank.

Unless she typically broadcasts in front of an upside-down world map. In which case, color me red with embarrassment.

The internet should be used for one thing and one thing only.
And, that's Porn.
but a warning to you kiddies, once you get broadband, nothing is enough.
don't let them tell you you're all searched out on the Net, there's plenty O' Porn out there.
It's like a birthday gift each time you hit the enter key.

no hoax folks.
haven't heard of Rocketboom, where have you been?
(if you're answer is "i have a life" -- well, okay.)

Like Chuck just said, it's no hoax. I really wish it were a hoax. But the last two weeks have clearly been very stressful for both Amanda and Andrew. I really, really wish this could have been resolved amicably; Chuck certainly tried his best, as did others on the team. Amanda and Andrew certainly wanted to make it work, and to their credit, didn't throw in the towel when sparks began to fly. But it seems it just wasn't meant to be. I'm sure Amanda and Andrew will have more to say about this publicly soon.

Who is Andy Carvin and why should we believe anything he says? What you wrote Andy is so vague and twee, that it makes Amanda and Andrew sound like hypersensitive 'tweens not adults. Sounds like the vlogging world has a lot of growing up to do.

I'm an occasional contributor to rboom, and Chuck is one of the original correspondents, not to mention a great independent vlogger in his own right. He tried very hard to help them resolve their differences but in the end, there was little any of us could do.

The fact remains this isn't a hoax and a lot of us are feeling like we're watching our parents go through a very public divorce. I find the whole idea of this being a hoax or publicity stunt really terrible. I almost wish it were a hoax. And as for me being vague, so be it - it's up to Amanda and Andrew to decide if they want to give the full backstory behind the breakup. What's done is done, and all we can do now is wish both of them the best of luck....

in other news, North Korea just tests seventh missile. only time will tell when nuclear warheads will be armed in those things.
ahhh, good times. I remember it well, in 1997 when we were on alert. that was the closest I've been to almost being sent overseas. Then came desert storm I.

Andy, I believe you when you say it's not a hoax. That said, you, Chuck, Andrew and Amanda are acting like selfish children rather than professional adults. From what I can piece together, it seems that Amanda and Andrew had a disagreement over RB, and instead of working out their issues they had a mutual hissy fit.

Here's the text that was just posted on the rboom homepage:

ROCKETBOOM ANNOUNCEMENT:

Amanda Congdon has decided to move to L.A. to pursue opportunities that have arisen for her in Hollywood.

We wanted to meet her request to move production out to L.A., however, we are a small company and have not been able to figure out a way to make it work, financially and in many other ways at this time. So sadly we bid Amanda adieu and wish her all the best.

Rocketboom goes on.

Andrew Baron, the founder and creator of Rocketboom, will stay with the company in New York and will continue to produce and direct the show. We are in the daunting process of recruiting a replacement for Amanda.

While Amanda will be sorely missed, we have big plans for Rocketboom and are determined to make the show better than ever.

After Field Week and a week on hiatus, we know that you are hungry for the news! Rocketboom will be back with a news episode and an interim host this MONDAY, JULY 10.

Good f'ing Christ, please don't tell me this is another thing I have to keep up with to prevent me from feeling old.

I hope this goes the way of Flooz, ScreamingMedia, and Yo.com

Anomalous -- you are the worst kind of troll.

Interim host on Monday already. Whoa!

Sorry if you see me as troll, Chuck, that is not my intent. I just see a bunch of smart young adults acting like children and I'm being critical of their behavior. Look, A and A have professional differences that couldn't be reconciled. Get over it and move on. Do you want vlogging to be seen as a legitimate form of news/entertainment or not? This "drama" makes everyone involved look like a joke.

Okay, I agree with most of that. :-)

Please note that they also have personal differences, and this is a personal medium - so you can't easily separate out the emotions or the human behavior. That's why blog/podcast/vlog mediums have great appeal, and why they're potentially very annoying.

wtf is rocketboom?

people actually listen to other people talk to them on the internet?

I only come to gothamist to see about bad crime and nyc racial strife.

peace ya'll
