We're getting ready to check out tonight's gorgerous July 4th fireworks, the city releases information that they seized 1,442 cases of illegal fireworks. The city had announced their summer crackdown on fireworks in early June, which included a new deterrant - the seizure of automobiles if one is caught with illegal fireworks. Over 50 cars were confiscated and over 120 people were arrested. And the people were really serious this year - there were even police chases into other counties to find vehicles carrying illegal fireworks!
Here's our post from yesterday noting where you can watch the fireworks. However, Treehugger tells us today that fireworks are actually just pretty pollutants, leaving all sorts of accelerants and heavy metals in teh air after the displays. And Asa Aarons looks at the difference between legal and illegal fireworks.

this is one big nanny-state country. people take no responsibility for their own actions, love to sue and for a free country we have more laws and regulations on the books than most other nations. sheesh. that said, happy 4th!!!! ;-)
Hmmm -- seems the fireworks will be upstaged by nature's own -- lightning and thunder. And rain - lots of it.
"this is one big nanny-state country"
I couldn’t agree with you more simon, but sadly the US has a high percentage of retarded children who like to perform incredibly stupid shit with fireworks, like holding it in one's hands while it explodes, or sticking a roman candle up one's butt.
I for one would allow all fireworks on the rule of buyer beware and use at you're own risk.
I wish they would have confiscated even more of those illegal fireworks-then I could have gotten some sleep at night these past few days, except for the unemployed, no-future retards who were setting tons of fireworks off outside my window. I was literally hoping that they would injure themselves severely, but no dice. But I still didnt get much sleep.
Fireworks, if not professionally handled are dangerous in a city environment. fireworks in the suburbs are much less dangerous when houses are further away from each other. here, in manhattan and the outer boroughs, it's just not safe.
and if you honestly believe that our laws are ridiculous here in the US, leave, you have no idea how good you have it, until you don't have it anymore. go to these other countries with better laws, less law suits and i'm sure in your eyes, better healthcare.
